Hey guys, been reading this thread since I got my laptop about a month ago at Best Buy. Recently I noticed dust and smudges accumulating in between the display's glass and actual panel as well as a piece of my laptops battery compartment being chipped off. So my battery has become lose but doesn't come off. I just contacted Dell tech support today and arranged my laptop to be shipped for repairs. I have never had to ship a laptop before and was wondering how reliable is the dell repair process? they say 7-14 days...can anyone confirm that? Thanks for your replies in advance :)

Compressed air or a Q-tip imo. If that doesn't do it, prolly a tooth pick or something small to fit all the way in there, but that won't scratch up the place.

could use a paint brush for the speaker grills + vacuum cleaner just above, so that the dust is sucked up....but NOT on any glossy finish!! paint brushes scratch the glossy surface REALLY bad.

I would strongly advise against using alcohol-based cleaners on any plastic-like product. Here's what happens over time if you use alcohol on a plastic that contains methylpropenoate:

Obviously, you want to avoid that. Furthermore, you don't know the chemical composition of this plastic. Therefore, don't do it!

Would you please try and lower your brightness and see if you see any flickering whatsoever. Because I haven't installed CCC (no need) and so I suppose win7 is still controling my rgb-leds :p

I suppose it could be a solution to the flickering and everything!

You are asking to test by reducing the brightness with the FN up/down Arrows, correct? (Not the controls in CCC).

Just flashed to A04, went smoothly. I just have a question for anyone who did a clean install through the Dell disc. Did you notice that your windows logon dpi is set at 120 dpi. I manually turned mine back to 100 by right clicking then screen resolution then make text smaller. Seems Dell has preset the native dpi to be 120 because when I log on the screen flashes. It doesn't to that if the windows dpi is at 120? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks

It might not just be a Dell thing. I put a copy of Win7 Professional on my 1647 and the DPI was set to Medium - 125%. Either Windows thinks 1920x1080 screens should be higher DPI or there's something in the Dell hardware telling Windows that a higher DPI should be defaulted.

So what is your desktop at? 100% or 125%, I also tried this registry hack and it doesn't do anything? Did you notice when windows is loging in the welcome screen will flash for a second? Only does this when desktop dpi is at 100% since W7 or Dell made the logon screen a default of 120 dpi???

That might be a Dell thing then. I changed my DPI back to 100 after reformatting and I haven't encountered what you're seeing.

If after you reformatted and you had to change it from 125 to 100 then you are experiencing what I am, you probably just can't tell. Windows 7 should be by default at 100 not 125. Its not a big deal at all, I just don't understand why Dell or Windows 7 put it to 125 as default on the SXPS16.

Good news guys...my system doesn't throttle anymore....here are my results:

Condition: 130w adapter, full brightness, 1920x1080 resolution. CPU idles at around 13x multi

    Prime95 multi=22x
    Furmark Multi=22x
    Prime95+Furmark Multi=22x

90w adapter, CPU idles at around 13x multi

    Prime95 multi=22x
    Furmark Multi=22x
    Prime95+Furmark Multi=10-13x

I also need to run some more temp testing, however, so far so good....I am very happy...

EDIT: Here is more result for 90w adapter, seems still throttles on 90w, so go get your 130w guys~~

When you plug a 130w in, the BIOS is updated automatically to show 130w?

I need to order one now that A04 is out, mine is running too hot ;)

Ok, I did some tests.. all on the 90 watt adpater

    Prime 95 - Load on 4 Threads
    Multi between 18-19 (TurboBoost enabled)

Prime 95 + Furmark + Screen full brightness
    Multi between 13-16 (Throttling)

    Prime95 + Furmark + Screen low brightness
Multi between 16-17 (Some very low throttling, default frequency)

If they claim this BIOS as a ultimate fix, they are extremely wrong, at least with the 90 watt adapter. In my opinion, if this BIOS allows the extra wattage of the 130 psu, then this is fixed.

So it looks like the Bios is detecting which adapter plugged in and acting accordingly??? If that's the case then its perfect.

Well yes, its engineered perfectly if its acting like that. But its not that perfect because Dell is not providing a 130 watt adapter for 1647's owners unless they claim it for heat reasons, this is wrong.

@danevin: My situation is a little more complicated because I am outside the US. But you should be able to get a 130 watt adapter from Dell, no matter where you bought the machine, just remember they will give it to you only because of heat issues.

Ran into an odd issue. I usually go to standby by pressing Fn+F1 but with this laptop, it seems to go into hibernate instead. Windows Power settings are set to sleep only when pressing the power or sleep button. Can one of you try this and see what happens?

I haven't been able to play it on the 1647, but just a word of warning, the 4670 in the XPS 16 is not equivalent to the desktop version of the 4670. The 4850 in your desktop will perform MUCH better than the 4670 in the XPS 16.

To compare, I have a 9800GTX+ in my desktop (which is around the 4850) and I can turn up a lot more settings (shaders, antialiasing) at 1080P than I can on the XPS 16, even though the 4670 has 1GB versus the 512MB in the 9800GTX+.

I am betting that you can run BF:BC2 on the XPS 16 just fine, but you will have to turn a lot of things down to run it at 1080P.

I lowered my brightness I you requested for the last 15 minutes or so and had no flicker whatsoever. May I suggest you install CCC and let it control your graphics to see what happens.? You can (and should) always make a restore point 1st before the install to revert back if does not solve your issue. Good Luck.

GPU throttling is going to happen no matter what adapter you have. Once the GPU reaches 84 degrees it will start to throttle. Lets hope that gets fixed, although its a safety issue I think the gpu can handle a little more heat.

@Todd: Once the final decisions are made please inform us. Im hoping to get the 130 watt adapter the same way 1645 owners did. This laptop is still throttling with A04 when using the 90 watt psu. I did some tests, if you want any verification please let me now. thanks

A04 with 130W is good, yeah?

I think then I will be ready to order a 1647, so I can have the RGB. The other option is the 1645 i7quad but the RBG isn't available now (Australia).

    @owners of 1645 who switched to 1647:
Was battery life improved going from quad to dual?
(i heard arrandale should have been a great improvement but want to know specifically for these s-xps machines)

Well, I ordered an XPS 1647 i7 620m after hearing about the new (now released) BIOS and potential to get 130w adapter. Pretty loaded with BR, 256 SSD and RGBLED. Ordered it last week (Thursday, 18th Feb) and got it yesterday!!! Was shocked at how quick turnaround was considering lead times I was reading here.

Then, today, I opened it. The inside packaging did not look "new" to me -- I bought a new unit, not from the outlet. The adapter was loose in the box and the cloth that covers the laptop looked a little dirty too. Seemed like somebody had opened it before??!! Another suspicious thing is that this thing shipped from Chicago and I got it in a day (I am in Chicago). Never had anything from DELL ship from Chicago, ever -- and I've bought a lot from them.

Did everyone here (who owns the 1647 and bought new) think the packing was good? That is, was the adapter loose, cloth dirty, etc.? Trying to determine if I got a "refurb" or "open box" unit. Thanks for any feedback.
