Hey Guys!
I just received my xps1647... and i must say that i'm very impressed so far!
Unfortunately, I can't get my soundblaster x-fi (pc card) to work with it!
When booting, the computer beeps and I can see "Resource Conflict - PCI in slot 0A Bus:05, Device:00, Function:00.
I guess that it is because another device (I think the ATI integrated audio has the same irq?). Thus I would like to desactivate it, but because of the simplistic bios i can't!
Would anyone of you guys have a suggestion?
-
I think it is pga because when I was putting the paste on mine I noticed the socket and saw that it is the standered just one screw and its out
-
update: when desactivating all peripherals in the bios, i still have the same problem but the bus becomes 04 instead of 05....
-
How big is the 130w adapter? I asked the guy I've been dealing with on the phone if it was the "slim" model like I read on these forums but he said he did not believe it is a slim model.
Any info would be appreciated thanks. -
From what I've seen in previous posts, it's double the thickness of the 90W adapter but not the giant brick it once was.
-
-
Seems pretty slim. How do I tell if its the "slim model"? whats the model # I should be looking for? -
i just got a 1647. should i wait to see if any throttling issues arise, or are they a definite? I should just call dell and get a replacement ASAP?
-
I dont know if you noticed but you are writing in the 1647 thread, you have a 1645.
Yes, call Dell and request the 130 watt adapter, you shouldnt have any kind of problems during that process. -
sorry, i did not notice. thanks for the answer though
-
I just got my 1647 replacement with an i5 540m, I look at task manager > performance. It only shows 2 fields, isn't it supposed to show 4 considering it has 4 threads?
Also I don't see the processor hitting anything more than 2.5ghz, how do I get turbo boost to function?
Thanks

Hey guys,
I've been contemplating several laptops for the past week or so, but I've been completely ignoring the XPS 16.
http://www.logicbuy.com/deals/coupon-Dell-Studio-XPS-16-Laptop/10806.aspx
I'd be looking at this deal, which seems pretty sweet. I've been looking through the past few pages of the thread for anything that could perhaps help me make a decision.
I know i7 runs hotter and uses more power than the i5.. I don't think I necessarily need an i7 over an i5 either. But the deal seems to require it, so I won't complain.
What do I need to know concerning this laptop? I've been searching for things..
I'd be getting the WLED 1920x1080 screen. I've been reading things about RGBLED.. does it honestly matter? Is this a nice screen?
How are the temps with the i7?
I understand I should get the 130w power adapter.. what about the GPU thermal paste problem? I don't like the sound of that..
I take the build quality and keyboard are pretty good (backlit, yay!). Those were two things concerning me with the Envy 15, which is why I've been looking for other options. Thanks guys! -

YO EGM92 the hyper-threading, 2 threads per core, is enabled/disabled in bios. Check your bios on startup to make sure it is enabled. Should be the reason...
And the yea there is a turbo boost patch/driver just like he said. -
installed the turbo boost drivers and turbo boost is now working, but haven't seen it go above 2.76ghz. About the hyper threading... I don't see it anywhere in the bios. anyone able to take a pic of their bios so I can compare it to mine...
I have an i5 540m
Just ran Windows Experience Index and the damn processor scored a 5.4! that's a worse ranking than my p8600 and far below the t9600. -
Don't worry something is wrong, your processor should be scoring 6.9, and if I open up my task manager I can see 4 threads. Not sure why it is not working for you but I am sure someone will be able to help
-
Now to wait for Dell to replacement my palmrest/keyboard tomorrow. -
Anyone has any guess about if we will see a Studio XPS refresh anytime soon like within the coming 2 months or it's still far off?
-
wow ur only like the 50th person to ask that same question only to get the same answer..........
@EGM92 thats weird that you had to flash the bios to get your cpu score -
say, i was wondering about the heat issues i've read many times in the Dell forums. What if somebody was to attach copper strips to the topside of the copper heat tube using arctic silver and a bit of tape? i've read somewhere that Dell intended the metal bottom cover to be a heatsink of sorts. would that work?

Hey guys,
I've been reading in some forms that some people are claiming that the 130watt adapter could cause motherboard damage to the 1647 because the mobo chips can't take more than 90 watts.
I just want to make sure you all know that there is absolutely no water in that argument. Dell engineers themselves have confirmed that the laptop will only take as much power as it needs... and the volts are the same. No damage will be caused.
Play on -
No damage will be caused, Dell is supplying 130 watt adapters and the motherboard is the same as the 1645.. they should know what there machine can take.
-
I would add that from my testing, my 1647 is capable of drawing more than the stock adapter is rated for.. IMO, everyone should get a free 130w Adapter for their 1647.
I'm not sure how much "headroom" the stock adapter actually has, but that did concern me. -
I know there is an "Order Thread", but I just thought I'd let everyone know there don't appear to be any current production delays (for U.S. customers at least) on the 1647 with the RGB display...I ordered mine on 03/23/10 with the RGB and blu-ray upgrades and it's scheduled to be delivered tomorrow (03/30/10)...and I only paid for the basic "7 Day Shipping"...go figure...
Oh, and I'm a newbie (very little computer knowledge), so I don't know if it means anything as far as the XPS line, but they are now offering the ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650, 1GB with TV Tuner on the i5 Studio 17...though there is no blu-ray, 1080p screen or SSD configurable...
-
Has anyone noticed high battery wear? One of my batteries is already showing 9.7% wear, while it's still less than a month old, and it has only been recharged 3-4 times!
-
-
0.0% wear for me.
-
Wow, didnt know that Studio 17's were available with the HD5650, we should expect HD5000 series for the SXPS 16 soon..
-
Edit: Also, the Studio 15 comes with the 5470. -
I dont know, performance levels are very similar, the 5650 doesn't make a difference in this case..
Besides, the Studio 17 is much bigger.
What I am really expecting is probably a 5730 on the SXPS, that will make a difference for gamers, which is not my case.. -
Sorry I haven't really followed this thread much because I had a 1640..Now I got a 1647..Whats the very newest BIOS for the 47, that includes compatibility with the 130w adapter (just got that too). Is A05 the newest?
-
Hi guys - seems like there's some speculation as to the next GPU. It's confirmed as a 5730 for the S-XPS 16. Slightly faster than 5650, which itself is about the same as 4670 (or barely better).
Best part is it uses 9W less power, and should be cooler = no more temp throttling! YAY
Try http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=451896 -
Im tired of everyone saying the 5730 is coming when they have 0 concrete evidence.. -
-
Post #24 (I don't know how to link the specific posts like I've seen others do)
I'm with you, I hate speculation that never deals in facts. But i thought Mkelliny and EGM92 getting it in replacement systems, and MadeiraG (tech told him "a week max" for this card, post #26) had confirmed it for us? -
Ps..why is everyone's name red all of the sudden? how do I change that?
pss...first post on new rig!!! its awesome~ -
Why would they use a 5730 and not a 5830? Just because the previous lineup got the 47xx?
-
actually the previous lineup was a 46xx
We assume that its going to be a 5730 because a while ago that card was available when you customized the machine, we know that it was an error and that gpu was immediately taken out of the site, but it might be related -
So I have a question for you all and need some help..I can't seem to tell if my machine is running in dual channel mode or not..
Just finally got this brand new 1647 all set up..I was sent another 4gb DIMM from dell and popped it in. Total of 8 gigs (4+4 matching pairs and type/speed), Windows etc. all recognize it correctly. I've gamed etc. all good..
My question is in CPU-Z, (i have the newest version) on the memory tab it correctly shows that I have 8 gigs but all the other columns are blank..specifically channel #s and DC mode. screenshot:
Why isn't it reading this stuff? on my old 1640 it displayed all this info..Could it be something to do with CPU-Z and the newer chipsets? Or is my computer running in single channel mode?
any help or info would be greatly appreciated..:/ -

Im finally getting my SXPS 1647 tomorrow
so I can join this thread without feeling a little bad. Wasn't completely Dell's fault, though. Im going back to Malaysia to pick up the laptop, then flying back to Jakarta 4 days later. Im feeling slightly nervous, as this is the most powerful system I ever had. Trying to prepare myself, so from the insanely long threads, this is what Im to do (in order, one after the other):
1. Install BIOS (newest for Malaysia is A05 13/03/2010)
2. Install ATI Catalyst 10.3
3. Install Turbo Boost drivers
4. Install Intel Chipset Drivers
5. Can't get the 130W adapter yet, because of the time window. But some people have said that the adapter ships almost overnight?
Is there anything I missed out? -
Im pretty sure this has to do with the how the memory controller is integrated into the GPU now (at least in clarkdale/arrandale) and not the cpu itself. The gpu chip is on the same package but not the same chip (off die). So now when the CPU wants to access memory it has to hop off to another chip (just like it used to when the memory controller was integrated into the North Bridge, FSB days) which is now the GPU.. This could be why CPU-Z isn't working with the arrandale based i5/i7s..still too new..
Jkleiss you have an i7 820m which is clarksfield and is based off the 45nm nehalem core where the memory controller is integrated into the cpu itself (on die). Thats why CPU-z works for you, that architecture has been out since late 2008 (nehalem) and your CPU is a derivative of that.
Guess I'll have to wait for CPU-Z to catch up.. -
booom got it! yea its cpu-z..Just installed everest ultimate..teeehee...
everything shows up..8gb in dual channel mode..1066mhz @ 8-7-7-20..hmmm...should be 7-7-7 but I suspect thats due to me havin' 8gb...ok im happy now -
Hi all,
First-time Dell home PC user. Ordered 3/24, shipped 4/2, ETA 4/9. Originally wanted 15 model, but they couldn't confirm when Blu-ray would be available, so went with 16:
Intel Core i5 540M processor (2C/4T, 2.53-3.06 GHz, 3M L3)
6GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm
16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD RGBLED LCD, W/2.0 MP, XPS 1645
ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB
128GB Solid State Drive
Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
BluRay Combo Drive
Soundblaster X-Fi Hi Def Audio Software Enabled
Intel 6250 Wireless-N w/WiMAX (2x2) Mini Card
9-cell Battery
Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module (2.1+EDR)
When I ordered, normal discounts were the exact same as EPP, so nothing there. Not sure if EPP would have had different configurations.
Learned a lot throughout 2400 posts, thanks for everyone chipping in. This is the kind of stuff I enjoy. Community makes it more worthwhile. Can't wait.
