Graduation stuff the next couple days has me pretty busy, so I'm not using/setting up the new laptop.

Sometime next week I'd be happy to do that though :)

How long do you guys usually run these programs for to test the CPU/GPU? (Sorry I'm a newbie)

I let it go until I really see not more rising in temp... That's just me though and shouldn't be a rule of thumb by ANY means lol

Try installing Soluto ( Soluto ? Anti Frustration Software. It'll help you figure out which software is slowing you down.

I'm thinking about getting one of these with the following options -

    Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Quad Core Processor 1.6GHz
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650

What kind of noise levels can I expect?

Also, I currently have an Asus G72GX with an Intel Core 2 Quad 2.0GHz and 1GB GeForce GTX 260M. Is there going to be much of a power difference between the two systems?

    Hello everyone,

I just purchased my studio 1647 yesterday with core i5 430m and i was just curious, does this laptop ship with the 90w or 130w adapter? Also, I'm assuming that when they build it they will have the latest BIOS on it correct? They wont make me flash it myself will they...?

Thanks for all of the help!

I received mine with the 90w adapter about 3 weeks ago. It got pretty hot for the first week so I rang up and asked for the 130w adapter and they sent it me for no extra charge.

The latest BIOS (A07) will be on your system because mine was! You'll have to install turbo boost yourself though but that's on the Dell driver site along with anything else extra you might need!

Have fun waiting for your new laptop!

Hey thanks for all of the help and insight!

Just another question, did it take long for them to send out the 130w adapter?

They sent it first class and I got it the next day. Seeing as I called at around 6pm and got the adapter at 10am the next morning, I'm gonna say that it didn't take THAT long :)

As far as I know yeah they do. But if you check the first post in this thread it says that if you call up complaining about your 90w adapter for your 1647 overheating then they'll send you the 130w adapter. I followed that advice and I now have a 130w adapter for home use and the lighter 90w adapter for traveling! :D

I am surprised that Dell has not asked for the 90W adapter back. I guess this is hit or miss with some.

    Hey guys,

I'm not one to be asking stupid questions and what not, but i ordered my SXPS 1647 on 6/21 (June 21st) and I am just curious, based on your experiences, when should i expect mine to be here? My specs are Intel Core i5-430m, 6GB DDR3, ATi HD 4670 1gb, 500GB, 9 cell, bluetooth...etc. (I did not get the RGBLED screen btw ! )

Thanks for all of the help again guys, and I am looking forward to being a XPS 1647 owner with the rest of you!

    hi, guys! im back again after a long hiatus. i just bought a refurb 1647 for $880 with the follwing specs: 2.53 i5/4gb ram/ 128gb ssd/rgb led 16 inch screen/dvdrw/9 cell/intel 6200N/ati 4670
what brand could the 128gb ssd be? still samsung?
i thougt my current laptop 1640 was dying, so i ordered a new laptop.
but after dell technician replaced the motherboard of my current laptop, i realized it was the program(world of warcraft) kept crashing my computer.
of course im so not goin to tell dell, it is their customer who made a blunder this time. /lol
dell 1640 may beruning a bit hotter than you like, but the build quality and sooling system can still hold its own even though i play wow on it all day.

Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
this is wat i found, benchamrks for 5730. 7743 3d mark06 for 5730, thats roughly 15% of performance increase from ati 4670.
5730 is still a mid range card as a 128 bit.

ok, pc wizard 2010 does work on win 7 and arrandale.
i didnt find any intel software installed on my computer, does that means turbo boost feature is auto on and being controlled by bios?

If you click "More Details" you will see that those numbers are from running it at 1280x768.....on my XPS 1645 the standard resolution which it runs at is 1280x1024.

If you look at the numbers on there at this resolution you will find that between 7200-7300 is exactly where it should be.

Can anyone give me some advice to optimize my Studio XPS 1645 for gaming? (Mobility Radeon 5730, i7 Q720, 1900x1080 display, 4GB RAM). I just purchased this laptop, and I have tried to run the Just Cause 2 demo at lowest graphic settings but max resolution and I only get 10 to 15 FPS. Is this what I should expect? I am playing with the 130w AC adapter plugged in. Thanks for any help, I appreciate it.

(BTW, if there is a more appropriate place for this question please direct me there, I am new to this forum.)

EDIT: Aaaand I posted in the wrong thread. Disregard! (Or don't, if you have some good advice!)

this is my 3rd xps 16 in a year and a half since early 2009, it seems to me 1647 has made some nice improvements than the older ones, the rgb led screen is slightly brighter than 1640s, noticable with 2 laptops sit next to each other; and the speakers are much louder, unlike 1640s, i can actually listen to music w/o a pair of headphones plugged in; although i havent seen much perrformance improvements from cpu or gpu or 1333mhz memory, mine has i5-540m (turbo mode 3.06), still i dont feel like its any faster than p8800 2.66.
overall im very satisfied with 1647, the only thing i wish this thing could have had is a nvidia graphic card.

the odd thing about 1647 is that the computer is quite noisy when the fan is on. dell went backward to make fan runs a lot fatster when its under heavy load, and the result is 1647 is much cooler than 1640 .
the highest temp ive seen so far is 78c w/o external cooling while playing wow on high performance. 1640 was like 88c with a tablefan blowing at it.
and the 9 cell battery does help too.

i have decided to purchase dell studio xps i6 laptop with i7 processor but i am confused about its display. on the dell india website, the specifications for xps 16 with i7 shows 15.6" edge to edge full hd display with truelife. i want to know whether its screen is backlit or not. the xps 16 laptops with core 2 duo processors have a WLED full hd display written in their configuration options. if the one with i7 processor is not backlit how would it affect the image quality? also i want to know the difference in image quality of studio 15 and xps 16.

If it's an 'LED' screen which all of the studio xps 16's have then it's backlit. I don't think the SXPS comes with anything but the LED backlit display. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

I don't think there is a massive difference between the 1080p basic studio display and the 1080p basic studio XPS screen. The studio XPS with RGBLED display is better however, if you can get your hands on one.

1st off, you can't get the hinges fixed because there is nothing wrong with them, it was designed that way. 2nd never, NEVER have the tech monkeys from Dell come to your house to touch your system they will fix one problem and give you two more after! get the parts from them and do it yourself. Just a piece of advice from someone who knows 1st hand and deals with Dell support on a daily basis.

If you don't want to spend any cash just use a microfiber cloth on top of your keyboard when you close the lid, or use the thin little sleeve/ pouch you got from DEll to put between the keyboard and screen when you close it.

is it wierd the way dell power adaptors work on dell 16 series.
those addaptors charges very slowly while your computer is running internsive programs on high performance mode.
sometimes batterys dont even gain 1% for the full hour of playing a online mmo. its like a 90w isnt pwoerful enough for the system.
