The WSXGA+ Won't Returning To the M1530 Anytime Soon

My friend was trying to purchase the same configuration laptop that I had, which included a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) LCD Display. However Dell seems to have discontinued it PROBABLY due to so much negative feedback since too many complained about them being "grainy".

Anyways from what I have seen MANY people are interested in purchasing a laptop with that resolution. 1440x900 is just too low and 1920x1080 is way too much. WSXGA+ was just the perfect size for a 15" laptop.

Anyways I contacted Dell asking whether they would ever bring back that resolution and possibly with LED. Here's the response I got from them:

"I am very sorry, but we don't plan on releasing any new LED monitors. There currently is not a 1680x1050 LED, and there is not plan to re-release it at this time."

If you really want to try one, they are in the Outlet. You will probably get one someone from this forum has returned! :D

I don't know of any laptops with an LED backlit WSXGA+ screen at all.
There are some that offer an LED WUXGA, but only in 17".

Yeah the MBP has 1440x900 LED in their 15 inch model too. The early specs I saw for the Studio claimed there was a WSXGA+ LED screen, so it may be coming eventually.

Was the WSXGA+ the only screen considered grainy in Dell's range?
I'm also thinking about WSXGA+/WUXGA, but I'm leaning towards WSXGA+ because WUXGA seems to be too much for my eyes.

The WSXGA+ had the most complaints in the 1520 -- more than the WXGA+ or WXGA. Dell seems to have used the same screens in the M1530 as in the 1520. At least they had the same HardwareID in Device Manager (e.g. -- SEC3350 for the Samsung). Usually if you got a screen made by LG Phillips, it was good. But most people seemed to get grainy Samsung screens. There have been some posts suggesting that Samsung may have cleaned up their act though.

The WUXGA is a relatively recent introduction. Most people seem satisfied with them except for the size of the type. I've seen some posts mentioning slight graininess, but apparently nowhere near as bad as some of the WSXGA+ screens had.

I read some stories about WSXGA+ a while back, but I am sure they took care of business by now. Though I'd pretty much avoid every Samsung screen if possible. Samsung should stop making screens if they can't deliver them properly. Or at least offer to have the screens replaced.
Anyway, the WUXGA seems to be too extreme for me. That's why I'm interested in WSXGA+, but even so...it's not easy. I would settle for a LED WXGA+ in the end...only if they would come to the laptop I will want.

Problem is, I think they "took care of business" by not offering the screen anymore.

Samsung makes great monitor and LCD TV screens. I am not sure what happened with this particular line for the laptops.

That's a shame, because 1680x1050 is just about perfect for a 15.4 inch display. I ordered mine about a week before they disappeared, and I must have gotte lucky because my Samsung is dandy.

Are there any manufacturers (Samsung, CME, LGP) that actually produce a 15.4" LED-backlit panel? Dell orders these from somewhere, but maybe there just aren't any existing panels that are being made.

I just checked Apple's website and the MacBook Pro has a 1680x1050 LED Screen. They even offer Glossy and non-Glossy Options.

So I am pretty sure that they are available. I wouldn't know where to look whether those manufacturers you mentioned offer those screen since they probably don't sell they directly to consumers anyways.

I ordered my XPS m1530 mid-May with a WSXGA+ 1680x1050 LCD screen. I was scared as anything while waiting for it to come. Result: It's a Samsung, and it looks perfect. No grain whatsoever. Very true colors, too, and bright as well. I guess they just decided it wasn't profitable enough...but I also agree that it's the perfect resolution for this size screen.

Maybe prospective buyers should wait until they change their minds? It's up to you all, but I'm glad I got the screen I did. Love it :D .

    It's only available in 17"

I'm fairly certain that the only 15.4" LED is 1440x900, none of the major panel makers list anything else as available for volume purchase.

Yeah, it's 17" only and from what I can tell only WXGA+ is offered on 15" models.
I'd like to see WXGA+ LED in Europe, but apparently all they have is the normal backlit screen.

Last I checked MBP 17'' has a 1920 x 1200 LED Backlit screen native. That was what it is when Dell removed their WSXGA+ resolution.

I'm assuming its because of Dell checking out the MBP to not have a WSXGA+ native. Though if you look at Alienware m15x for example, they don't have a WSXGA+ screen either, and Alienware is the most expensive notebook. You'd think they'd at least offer a WSXGA+ resolution for those. I guess WSXGA+ is just not the thing anymore.

I'm just glad my Dell E1505 still has a 1680x1050. It really is the perfect resolution for 15.4''.

My theory on this is that a number of Samsung screens were indeed lousy, and as such the reputation on boards like this built to the point that as soon as anyone got a Samsung display they were calling Dell and demanding an LG replacement regardless of whether their individual screen was bad or not. People will always see what they're predisposed to see. I'm sure many really were bad. But I'd bet that an equal number were not.

Dell probably got weary of replacing perfectly good displays just because the model name started with SEC.

Thats the thing. I think Dell wanted to rid the WSXGA+ resolution to begin with.
