The XPS 15 L502X Dell laptop is the newest one I believe right now has DDR3 standard on the GT 540M card I am using this machine right now.
Basicly the DDR standard has to do with the MHZ frequency (how fast the physical memory can communicate with the motherboard) so DDR 1- 3 are all just faster and faster MHZ VRAM.
However GDDR5 is a much higher standard so for heavy video editing and extreme multitasking while gaming its a better type of video ram though.
I am not to clear on the technical side how its worked out to make GDDR5 a more than a linear upgrade but from what I have read it is just way better.
* quick edit if you are getting the new i7 chipset it was only 30 dollars more for the 2720QM when I bought mine so if you want to future proof for programs that will need Quad core's to perform better down the line it may be worth it. -
The XPS15 GT540M uses its own 2GB of DDR3.
GDR5 is a lot faster, cost more and uses more power. The cost and power are why you don't see it in the current gt540m.
The XPS 15 with GT 540M is ddr3 or gdr5?
