Tested on : Dell XPS 14 (L401X)
So, finally, I've found a solution that might be useful to all of you folks, to the annoying power-saving feature of backit keyboard.
The Problem: When the backit keyboard turned on, chances to remain idle for more than 30 seconds, then it would automatically switch off to save power, which is very annoying to most users.
The Solution:
1) Goto 'Windows Mobility Center'. To do this, click 'start', and on search box, type in 'Windows Mobility Center', and press Enter. Or, you can use one of the touch sensitive buttons to go to the Windows Mobility Center.

2) Once you reach the mobility center, click on the backlit keyboard icon. This is shown as below.

3) Now, on clicking, you should see a dialog box as shown below.

4) Follow the instructions shown in the illustration below.

So now, you've finally got rid of the annoying 'power saving' feature of the dell's backlit keyboard. So thanks for reading this thread! So have fun and NJOY!

duuuuuude, optimize those photos. Your post has 6 megs of photos. I haven't seen pictures load like that since the 90's.
-
Sorry for it, I'll correct and resize it as soon as possible.

I don't get the Dell options in Windows Mobility Centre. I think it's because I did a clean install and wiped off all the bloatware.
Does anyone know which Dell application(s) I need to install to fix this???
Thanks
Lee -
I think that is "QuickSet" application beacause i did a clean install too and still have this option in the mobility center.
-
I love the backlit keyboard however...absolutely awesome!!! -
Well, you can download the dell quickset application from here: http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/R294210.exe. -
Cool. Never knew there's a setting to change that. Thanks for the share! =)
-
Really. Thanks alot for solving a long awaited issue!!!
-
That is a great tutorial, and a very sleek desktop/theme you have there!
I have one problem, when I reboot, the "never off" option goes back to "1 min". Any way to get that to remain in the "never off" position"?
Thanks for the help. -
-
Anybody else encountering this issue?
-
I can't get the Quickset64 application to run on my L701x....it keeps saying that my system is not supported???
Help!!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeease!!!!! -
Cheers!!!!!!!!!!! -
Thank you for solving that annoying issue.
What app did you use to illustrate your pictures? -
Thanks, this was annoying me as well. Set it to 15 mins.

Oh, and I also set it to 15 mins.

So, all of us are really enjoying this stuff! Oh, and thanks for watching this tutorial.
-
Well, can you find some more fixes like this one? It would get much more interesting.

It doesn't work for me. I've known about the tip here for quite a while but have not been able to get it to "keep" my settings as after a reboot it reverts back to dimming after one minute no matter my settings in power options either. Guess I've just learned to live with it but I'd happily accept a fix if anyone knows one.
-
I'm an idiot. Never mind. QuickSet for XPS 1640 has this option too.
-
Haha, I have the xps 1640, and I didn't even knew there was an option for "Never off". All you need to do is click the keyboard logo. I feel so dumb lol.
-
-
Well, for me I thought that you just right click, but nothing happened so assume that there was no option. I really cant believe that you just click it, I had this for almost 2 years now.
-
This was just a coincidence for me too. And look I found a solution for a well-known problem.
Well, @Cap: for me, it always remains to 'Never Off' setting. Not sure about your problem, though. -
@ CAP, I'm in the same boat as you. I have done lots of searching on the web and I see other people with the same problem. I haven't seen a solution. I have uninstalled/reinstalled Quickset with no solution.
-
It's weird how it works for some and not others. Oh well, glad to hear it does work for some of you.
-
Well, for me, it works fine. Not sure why it doesn't for others.

I may have finally found the "fix" for mine!
I recently installed a new Dell Bluetooth mouse. I was having trouble with my laptop keeping my settings on cursor speed and started looking for a fix. Turns out it wasn't the Dell mouse at all but was a start-up command from another mouse (the one the new one replaced). That pesky little devil was still starting at start-up even though I didn't have it plugged in and must have been the reason all along for my keyboard not keeping my settings too. SO, long story short, I went into msconfig and unchecked the box for that command, rebooted and presto, since then my keyboard has kept my "never off" settings!
Don't have any idea the connection between the two and don't care. Just happy my keyboard is keeping my settings now. By the way if anyone has a USB wireless Logitech mouse installed and your keyboard doesn't keep your settings, you may want to try out this fix. Just go into msconfig, start up tab, and uncheck the logitech KHALMKNPR.EXE command, and reboot. I can't claim the know how for this fix, I found it in a microsoft forum. The fix was suggested to fix settings for a mouse. It just turns out it worked for the keyboard too somehow. Later. -
+Rep for your efforts -
