i have a dell xps m1330 came with ubuntu preinstalled. its a great laptop. but the fan runs most of the time not full speed but load enough to be audible in a quiet room. when i installed a cpu temperature monitor it showed the average CPU temperature hovers between 40c and 55c when ever am using the system for just browsing the web. is this normal.
    here are the system specs
    320GB hard drive 7200 RPM
    Intel Intergrated card 3100
    4gb ram
    core 2 duo 2.2 ghz
i chatted with dell tech support and he said it was normal for my system to get 60c 55c 70c is this true. am thinking maybe its because the my hard disk speed is high (7200) please if u own a dell xps m1330 can you please tell me the average temp of your computer... esp if u have the intel intergrated card. thanks in advance.

please any help would be appreciated .. becasue this issue troubles me alot and have given me sleepless night. i just want to know if they is a defect on this laptop so i can return it before my 28 days expires. thanks in advance.

am using the latest bios for the m1330 A13 .. A12 came with the laptop. and had the same problem. i was advised to upgrade my bios and i upgraded to A13 still the problem persist. maybe that is the way the laptop was designed .. i just want to be sure. if not so i can return it for a replacement.

That's quite odd, Since how much the fan runs is purely controlled by the bios, and the fact that your temps aren't really that high, or even that much above normal.

Keep us posted on whether you get it replaced or not.

In my m1330 the fan never stops, but it is always on the lowest speed that it is not possible to hear it unless I put my ear on the vent, so it could be the same just you fan is louder and needs to be replaced, another thing it is will known that the 7200 rpm hard driver are louder than the 5400..

usuaully changing the fan will do the trick. But finding a fan that is quiet is the hard part.

Its the modified thermal control profile for the GPU, not the CPU
The fan comes on at a lower GPU temp to try and maintain the GPU at a constant temp
    Its normal but annoying

I have an older XPS M1330, that I bought way back in August 07 with the Nvidia GPU and LED screen. It has BIOS A03 or A04 maybe? Anyway, never a single issue with it and the fan hardly ever spins. I only hear when doing something really CPU or GPU intensive.

I would never buy a laptop that has a constantly spinning fan. That's the most annoying thing and I would return it right away. It's too bad Dell screwed up a very nice laptop. There are nice laptops out there without all that noise, shame on Dell.

Well yes, the older revision bios dont have the thermal control. It was only put in after all the GPUs started dying as per this thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=204772

So from A10 or so I think it started, with each revision the fan comes on sooner and stays on for longer

i cant thank you guys enough for all the help and suggestions. i just would like to know what i should do... would things get worse if i refuse to replace the heat sink?. the laptop doest get extremely hot. although some part of it gets warm a lilttle. and my cpu temp is around 40c and 55 when using firefox. when i do cpu intensive task like compiling an application. it might get to 60C but doesn't stay at 60c for long and usually drops back to 50c has never gotten 70C. the only problem is just that the fan spins at low speed must of the time.. frankly dont want to change anything on this dell because from what i have read.. it might make matters worse.. i bought the laptop from the us but i dont live there and i would have to send the laptop there for repires at great expense. so unless the problem is really bad and could get worse... i dont think i would want to send it in for the heat sink change. remember i use the intel x3100 intergrated card which doesnt seem to have the kind of heat problem that affect the nvidia model. i guess am one unlucky bastward :(
