Ok so here is the deal. I got my M1530 (2.4ghz, 256mb video mem, 4gb ram, 320gb HDD) almost a year ago. Overall I am relatively pleased with it. Except for learning about the heat/melting issue. I also wish it had a little more omph. So my question is, is the SXPS 16 a significant jump in performance and overall build quality? If so, then would it be a good idea to sell my old M1530 on ebay and buy a refurbished SXPS 16 (with greater than or equal specs to my PC) from Dell Facotry Outlet (assuming one pops up. Just saw one but is disappeared  ). How much would mine sell for on ebay (if that is even the best place?). Thanks.

Well I did the same thing sadly mine with the 2.0ghz, 8600gt, sold for a measly 700.00. Thats half of what I bought it new for. It was not even a year old. I would say no, it wouldn't be much of an improvement, but just do it because I am sure it is of better build quality. I never really liked my xps m1530's build quality it seemed weak. So i also hope the build quality is better. I would go for the 6mb cache cpu. If you want the best power go for the 2.66 or 2.93ghz cpu , but just a warning the 2.93ghz is a T model which means it uses 35 watts instead of 25 watts like the p series.

    The differences are:

xps m1530 800 mhz cpu while the 1640 is 1066 mhz. An 266 mhz increase.
Xps m1530 uses ddr 2 @ 667 mhz while the studio xps 1640 is @ 1067 mhz. An 400 mhz increase.
512 mb's or video ram. Though its subjective if the ATI card can access all 512 mb's of ram efficiently.

An advantage is the cpu and ram are almost at equal speeds so the performance gain would be even greater.

    * Maybe try craigslist, and I have been told numerous times not to sell to anybody in Nigeria!

i dont know what you are talking about when you say "CPU" but the fsb of the m1530 is 667 mhz. Also the speed difference from ddr2 to ddr3 is not even noticable. and as for the GFX card the video ram is not what you want to compare.... compare them by the bus width and gpu power alone (the ati is still faster).

but then again if i were you id keep the m1530 and just save up for a new next lappy...tbh you will not see a performance difference when it comes to normal task.

laptops depreciate in value really fast.....

i wouldn't go out and buy the SXPS though... its not that much newer technology, and its a little bigger(and 16:9 screen... IMO less useful for web surfing/office productivity)

By oomph, yes, I mean gaming, AutoCad, mass file moving, etc. Mostly gaming though. Can anyone comment on how the/my M1530 compares to the SXPS16 (2.53/2.66/2.93). Obviously its better, but how much? I can play Crysis on medium/low, GTR Evolution on full but at 30fps and Hitman Blood Money on almost full. With the SXPS what would I be able to do.

Also about how much would my M1530 go for. The only reason I spent a lot ($1700) on it was for the 3 year warranty and the 3 year lojack. I also got ripped off by stupid Dell "sales". I also did not know about the magic of this site. If I can sell it for around $1000-1200 I guess that would more or less cover the cost of a refurb SXPS16.

if you have 3 years warranty, stick with it...

the biggest minus for the m1530 is the possibility for the GPU to die.. since you have warranty, don't worry about it

stick the money you have right now into the bank(well, interest rates suck, but still... ) in 3 years when your machine dies or you want to upgrade, laptops will be much cheaper and have better hardware... ebay the m1530 then for like $100 for parts/AS-IS, then buy a new laptop for ~$500

yeah if anything I may just get good custom made desktop for my high power needs. The m1530 will make good average all purpose laptop a couple of years from now and a desktop will be able to change with the times.
