Just checked Dell Canada's prices and to my surprise, the 17" XPS is now selling for cheap. Well, maybe not cheap, but cheaper. A decent setup (T7200, 2GB RAM, 7900GS) can now be had for $2399, wheras the same system would've costed $2799 a week ago. Do you guys think I should buy? Something's telling me Dell's trying to get rid of all their DX9 parts for DX10... needless to say it'll totally suck if a DX10 comes along shortly after (in which I'd gladly pay more for). So whatcha think? Maybe get the M1710 first and hope that the DX10 part later-on would fit in the current MXM slot? Or wait for a redesign that's possibly coming in 4 months?
edit: As for my needs and such, I really don't know. Ever since having the Sony A series a few years back I've been looking for the perfect laptop... to no evail. I've been buying, selling, and returning laptops so much these few years it's really starting to get sickening. No matter what I get, nothing quite matches the quality of the A series. The next logical step would be getting another Sony laptop right? Wrong, Sony's no longer the company it used to be. Sorry to say, but poor quality control all over, not to mention the piss-poor configs we now get here in Canada. Hmm.. the XPS is known for quality right?

I would not buy the M1710 now... There will be a new one in a few months with DX 10. I prefer to wait then paying 2500$ for a DX 9 gaming notebook.

DX10 cards will come out hopefully in 4 or 5 months with Centrino Pro platform. But just because DX10 arrive doesn't mean DX9 cards are going to be obsolete anytime soon. Game developers will continue to support DirectX 9 cards for at least for 2 or 3 more years before moving exclusively to DirectX 10.
For example, Need For Speed Carbon, which was released very recently Still supports GeForce4 Ti / Radeon 8500 directX8 cards. And I bet it'll run on them at an acceptable level of performance too. I've played NFS carbon on a Radeon 9600Pro, performance was ok, it was certainly playable. A GF4 Ti 4600 is similar in performance to (sometimes faster than) a R9600 PRO. Here we are talking about a card that was released 5 years ago.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that go buy a DX9 card now when DX10 cards are almost out; nor saying that DX10 cards wont have a major impact on future games or anything like that. Just pointing out that arrival of DX10 cards does not mean that it is the end of road for DX9 cards.
Having said that; If you are not in urgent need of a new notebook right now, then by all means wait for DX10 cards to come out!
Thinking of getting a Dell XPS M1710 but..
