This is why it's probably worth waiting for Montevina......

Intel announced (sort of) on 15th July that the Quad Cores will be in Mobiles from August.

Admittedly few people will buy a QX9300 next month at about $1000+ each (just for the CPU), however with your Montevina likely being able to drop it in as a CPU replacement in 18 months for say $200 will be a bargain.

And before all the "what do you need Quad for anyway" brigade start up if you run Linux and multiple apps, watch your Quad just handle the load NP.

Nice! The power consumption on that chip isn't that bad actually. The price though, you could buy a decent M1530 for that price. Sheesh!

Current configurations available, although not the top in performance (speaking of the XPS Line) is going to be an enjoyable laptop for another two years. I believe the next MMO I will play after FFXI will be DC Universe Online, and the 8600m GT should be able to decently handle that, and my T8300 wont have a problem at all.

Then in two years, I purchase a new laptop =D. In this day and age value speaks, and when new technology comes out, its not worth the price to be the test pigs of it and be gouged.

Remember when people paid $300 for 1st Gen Razrs? Now you cant even get them for free from Verizon!

Power consumption for the quads will be equivalent to the Core 2 Duos non-Penryn.

But what game is a T8300/9300 going to be bottlenecking in the next year or so?

Mobile QuadCore QX9300 is supposed to have a TDP of 45Watt.

Such a high TDP has only been specified for the Extreme Edition of multiplier unlocked mobile CPUs. X7800, X7900, X9000, X9100. In this case it doesn't matter that much whether you go Merom (65nm) or Penryn (45nm). They all have 44 Watt TDP.

The general purpose Core2Duo mobile CPUs T5x00, T7x00, T8x00, T9x00 all have 35 Watt TDP.

    LOL, overkill!
Seriously, unless youre a die hard multitasker with tons of applications running, i cant see the point of buying a Quad. What about the games...Ive heard rumours that a lot of games cant even utilize all the cores at the same time. Which means its kinda useless for most people.

But hey, if you wanna have the latest, go for it :)

There are other application domains, which are nice for quadcores:

    . H.264 transcoding
    . compiling source code
    . multiple virtual machines

Are those tasks something you should be doing on a laptop?
