Hello all, I am new to the forum.

I had a xps m1730 refurbished that I had for several years, that is now dead. I am looking to buy one of the new xps 15's. I priced an LXO1, and now I see the new LXO2's, so I am waiting, and using a very old ASUS from my brother in law.

I am concerned about over heating. I had to set my m1730 on dvd cases on the edges, otherwise the laptop would shut down from overheating. I want to make sure that the new sandy bridge processers don't cause the XPS 15 to overheat. I am also curious if I should try winging for a while, to see if the prices come down a bit, and possibly if dell gets a better GPU offering for the XPS 15 LXO2, because it appears the current video card is mediocore at best.

    Thanks.

There should not be overheating problems with the L502x as all support optimus, which means your gpu will only run when needed. As far as waiting for a better gpu offering, remember that this is not a gaming notebook. It is a decent "all around" notebook. If you game a lot, go for the alienware or another brand.

I am not neccessarily looking for a gaming notebook, in fact the most graphics intensive game I play is star trek online. My concern is that if a game comes out that I want to play, (the new elder scrolls offering) I want to be able to play it without buying another computer. I don't need it to run in ultra resolution, but I don't want it to lag or freeze either.

Alienware seems to have gotten a few bad reviews, I could just not be reading enough as well. It also seems like alienware wants a lot of $$$ for less goodies then what the XPS 15 is offering.

Well, I'm not a laptop gamer. I have a ps3 and 360 for that. But, I did play black ops on the system in my sig on 1366x768 res. and it played flawlessly. Yes, the 420m was severely oc'd, but temps never got above 75c, nor did the processor. This was while playing on my lap which covered 75% of the air intake ports also. I ordered the L502x on Tuesday and expect it to play even better with the new i7 2720QM and GT 540M when oc'd. So, from my little bit of laptop gaming knowledge, I see no problem in playing even the newest games on medium graphics settings. And with Optimus, you don't have to worry about excessive heat or power usage when not gaming.
