The only SPDIF output AFAIK on the m1530 is through one of the front headphone or microphone jacks. If you are just going to hook up 5.1 computer speakers it will come with it. There is also the HDMI output that you can get SPDIF through using a standard HDMI cable. There are also specialty ones that go from a 3.5mm to RCA if you are doing something special.

    20. Should I be worried about the faulty NVIDIA GPUs issue?

Not really. The problem is with a weak die/packaging material which GPU temperature fluctuation could cause to fail overtime. Dell has acknowledged the problem and has decided to extend all warranties by 12 months to a maximum of 60 months. So if like me your M1530 has a 3 year warranty you now have 4 years, 3 years of full coverage and 1 additional year covering only the GPU. So the 12 months extension is only to cover GPU failures.

Here's a link to the [IMG] which explains the issue and the side effects.

I am interested if this driver is bios A11 version also, on my m1530

hmmm its 3/11/08 here and its still in the ship from factory stage, maybe they will ship it directly to my house

oh and BTW i live in an urban area so maybe they ship them early there, who knows???

Edit: Does anybody who owns a XPS in India confirm if the Nvidia 8600M GT has GDDR3 memory or DDR2 memory as i heard in another forum that you only get a GDDR2 Nvidia card in India. It says GDDR3 on the site

Finally got my xps the other day.. But it had plastic off screen and two small chips... Guess techs weren't very carefull.. had it replaced with trraded my original chipped AU (sp) screen for a LG.. Pretty kewl.. But my laptop includes the following..

    nvidia 8600 256mb
    250gb 5400rpm (for now)
    1440x900 LG screen
    6 cell :(
    2.5 processor
    4gb

and now loaded down with programs n movies and music :)

Working great.. Coming from a dell fan but I've had a Vostro 1500 for past year and had a Vostro 1510 which was pure SH!T don't anyone get one of those.. They are light ya, and will fall apart lol.. I told Dell to take it back.. And got the xps which is light and does not lack the light build syndrome as the 1510 does..

Like the touch media buttons a lot too and the addition of a HDMI port where as the 1500 didn't have one nor did the 1510 have that or a s-video.. < POS

Get's a 9 out of 10 from me.. Only reason I say that is I think speakers could have been a little better then they are and wish it had 1 more usb port..

(regarding Question #20 in this thread)

I have read these forums some and read the dell blog posts about the defective nvidia GPU issues.
    (DELL XPS m1530, 8600mgt)
My new problem does not fall under the possible symptoms described, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the GPU has started to fail.

My symptoms started a few days ago for no good reason:
When doing anything graphically intense, such as watching streaming Hulu video, or playing a game, after a period of time the laptop just SHUTS OFF, basically instantly. That period of time ranges from 5 minutes to 15 minutes. One time I saw it flip up an error message that I did not recognize right before it shutdown, but it was only visible for like a quarter-second so I didn't read it.

It never used to do this!

I have not seen any of the lines or other mangled gpu artifacts.

What can/should I do to diagnose the problem? Thanks for your wisdom!

My best guess so far is that the GPU has started to fail and that once the GPU gets too hot, something goes wrong and it causes the laptop to instantly power-down...

I can't imagine this being caused by a software issue...

    Thoughts?

I actually like the 6 cell over the 9 cell. Its so much lighter to carry around and I really dont think the time is that noticable.

6 cell for when out and about doing things :D

It's the elevation and ventilation I really like about the 9 cell! ;)

I just received my refurbished XPS from Dell Outlet and my suspisions were confirmed. I noticed a problem with the build detail I was provided with the purchase.

It listed a CM282 lcd bezel which is for the LED display.
Further down, it listed the lcd panel as XR878 Samsung.

This did not seem to make sense, so prior to receiving it in the mail, I registered the computer on dell's website and used the xps premimium chat support. The agent would not give me any information about previous support on the laptop, or the original ship date based on the service tag #.

I proceeded to ask about the bezel conflicting with the lcd display, originally listed as a WXGA display on the outlet. The agent informed me it was an LED display. Then she said it was 15.4", Samsung WXGA.

I stated I was not aware of an LED screen that was made by Samsung, nor a WXGA resolution and was told the screen was actually 1440x900 resolution.
Great!......or so I thought. My XPS was just delivered last night and I fired it up and immediately checked the display...

My display hardware is it listed as LPL0201!!!!!! I then took a closer look at the display and it is definitely a matte finish!

My first thought is what kind of a cobbled machine do I have!
My second thought was what kind of premium chat support is it that Dell offers? Terrible!!!!!!

I appreciate all the great info this forum provided me for my purchase and I am looking for any input on how to resolve the issue. Thanks.

I just received my Dell M1530 in the post. :D
I have used it for about 2 hours, but now it has to be packed away until Christmas day! :(

I also got the new 'Dell Dock' packaged with my Laptop, it's pretty nice but I don't know how to customize the theme and icons - I don't even know if that's possible.

I ordered mine with a WXGA+ screen, and have no grainy screen or anything. I'm also really impressed with the battery life (6 Cell).

    Can't wait until the 25th! :)

Also, I have a question. I want to play a few games on my Laptop and have heard that the drivers from LaptopVideo2Go are very good, but will installing these have any effect on my hardware, and will they shorten the life of any of the hardware?

    Thank you. :)

Just want to share the quality control issue I found on my new 1530..

I had the bulging keyboard so I found the thread that outlines repair.

My keyboard was bulging because the video cable was crossing over the antenna cables and was actually outside the channel it is supposed to run in. Terrible mistake that would have eventually caused a failure..

    Even worse.. 8(
The media panel was bulging as well and it was very hard to push the power button. The ribbon cable was mangled horribly and actually ran directly under the power button!!! So I was mashing it against the circuit board to turn on the computer!! Horrible quality control coming out of china....

Any new laptop is only as good as its warranty these days...
I have 3 years of complete care which is the number one selling point for a Dell in my mind. I work at a university in the IT department and the most common thing we see is brand new laptops failing right outside of their one year warranty. Drops, breaks, and spills are also very common and other manufacturers often offer no coverage for such events..

So, you were able to fix, then..

That's too bad this happened. Being so new, I may have called Dell and asked for a new replacement if w/in the 21 days. The price you pay for a lappy these days ~ and in this economy ~ you should get what you paid for..Something in reliable working order = for everything on it! ;)

Once of the reasons, why I got the 3 year *all around warranty* is to cover myself from accidents, and system issues. ;)

Hey folks. I had my Samsung SEC3350 (1680x1050) replaced today with an LG LPLDF00 (1440x900). Can you believe that? How incompetent can Dell be.

I had a question though, are both the 1680x1050 LG screens glossy? I'm having my screen replaced again, but even if it is an LG I can't live without my glossy screen.

One more thing, this LG is insanely bright. Does anyone know how the brightness of the two LG screens compares (1680x1050 vs 1440x900), I can't tell because I know my original Samsung isn't as bright as any of the LG screens.

    EDIT: Made a thread

I just picked-up my new M1530 last week. Only dissapointment is the screen resolution (1280 x 800). How does the higher resolution look? Less grainy and sharper edges?

Is your screen res. really bad?

I have the 1440x900 on mine..it's an LG and its fantastic. :D
Crystal clear viewing...the way it should be ;)

If you just rec'd your 1530, and are having probs with the resolution ~ you have 21 days from date of invoice to return for a New replacement/or refund. After 21 days..refurb.

    Keep that in mind. :D

My new machine has the answer to this lingering question. The HW ID is SEC3358 for the following line item in the system build list:

W656G Liquid Crystal Display 15.4WXGA, True Life, Samsung V2

Per my previous post, my only disappointment is the native screen resolution where I would prefer higher definition. Admittedly, I didn't spend much time on this when I made the purchase decision, and only after that fact and with some research am I reconsidering this purchase.

To note, my Samsung LCD seems acceptable. However, I am considering two options. First, call Dell and purchase a higher resolution LCD screen (which I anticipate will be costly). Second, return the M1530 for an M1330 which has the same an almost identical configuration (CPU/RAM/HD/VIDEO) less the BD but the same 1280 x800 resolution on a 13.1" screen which improves the overall sharpness and viewability. The M1330 at Best Buy is using the AU Optronics LCD panel and is also clearance priced at $899.

I welcome any feedback as I work to make a decision.

Thanks & GREAT DISCUSSION FORUM. Thank you Rohan and others!!!

Yes, Rhodan created an awesome thread here, and the contributors have been awesome :D

It comes down to what you exactly want. So, you didn't purchase thru Dell directly? Did you purchase the 1530 at BB???

Both the 1530 and 1330 are good notebooks, both have had their own problems...But that affects each person individually.

Purchasing a separate screen will cost more. Do you want to invest more money into something? When, you can potentially return the system and get what you want? Thats something to consider.

Also, if you can get something cheaper, and it's what you want..that is another good thing.

The Samsung isn't a bad screen, really.

Cin - You are certinaly one of the AWESOME contributors here!!!

Yes, I purchased my system at Best Buy. Here is the link to the pre-configured M1530-147B:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8989124&type=product&id=1218006773367

Note that in-store price was decreased from $1299 to $1169 yesterday.

Slightly off-topic but relevant to this thread; this is my 5th Dell computer. I ordered my first Dell desktop via phone in 1998 before online puchasing became the norm. I've been loyal ever since, even when working through frustrating issues. My other Dell notebook is also an XPS machine- an XPS M140. As Dell evolves their go-to-market strategies, including the rumored end to consumer customized configuration orders, I have enjoyed visiting "Dell Kiosks" in local malls to see the latest technology in-person. While I enjoy configuring and researching online, nothing beats physically handling the machine. I think Dell made a smart choice joining-up with Best Buy and putting their "hat-in-the-ring" so to speak with Apple & HP to get their technology on the shelf for consumers to compare. Undoubtedly, this has spawned better products such as the XPS M1530.

Hence, when I was in the market for a new Dell, I visited Best Buy and was immediately impressed with the M1530 and M1330. What specifically sold me on the M1530 was the Blu-ray Disc BD-ROM/BD-R/BD-RE DVD±RW/CD-RW slot-load drive. I am looking to upgrade my camcorder to solid state HD to record the kids in high definition and retire the mini-DV tapes. The ability to burn to BD is highly appealing. This makes returning the M1530 that much more difficult.

But to your point, the M1330 is solid and less DINERO. I don't think I would be giving up much; the notebook is more portable; the resolution is higher; and it's a (Product RED) configuration which gives something back.

Now for the wrench... the new XPS Studio is also calling my name!!!

    Thanks :D

I think you are on your way to knowing what you want!

The XPS Studio 1340 and 1640 are both great new lappy's by Dell.
As, with the 1530 and 1330. What choices you have to make! :D

Now, since the price came down a bit on your purchase of your 1530 from BB...Doesn't BB match and beat their own prices? Meaning, can you not also get some money back on the price differential?? ;)

I agree, I don't think you would be giving up a lot if you chose to go with the 1330. And, true Product Red..give's back in such a easy, and awesome way! :D

    Cin ;) :)

P.S. What you described with Dell, and your past purchase..that was nice to hear. When, I was looking at Dell's as my first purchase. I, also used the kiosks as a way to play around and see what I wanted :D Too, bad they are not around anymore...But, the fact that stores such as BB, Office Depot, etc. are selling them, makes it easier just the same!

Hey all...I'm a little late to the XPS party, but excited to be here.

My new system arrives on Tuesday. I'm nothing more than a causal comp user (internet, Office, etc) but looking forward to everything. I wanted to spend around $1000 and get a good system, even if I don't take advantage of all the goodness it offers.

I decided to get another Dell because I wanted to customize and build the system to the detail I wanted. What's funny though is that I'm now going crazy over all the choices I made! But, I'm sure I can't go wrong. Reading this is great, and keeps me occupied as the arrival day nears - almost a little like "What to Expect When You're Expecting."

Anyway, got a question to help tide me over:

I'm getting a LED LCD with a 2MP camera. It seems at first the LED screens had .3 MP camera built in. Is the 2MP going to add thickness to the screen panel, and perhaps, make it the same width as the regular, CCFL LCD?

Even if it does, I'm still excited about the LED. Thanks guys.

I can confirm that with the LED there is a 2MP camera. The screen thickness is thinner than the CCFL LCD.

Yup yup! The .3 VGA cam is only for the M1330, NOT the M1530. :)

One thing you mentioned here, is the 21 days from the date of purchase to get a refund. But isn't that including 15% restocking fee?

Reason is because I'm not sure the unit will work for my needs 100% and the dell reps in some over-seas country that I could barely understand, said I can't send the system back to upgrade the parts(video card, and LCD to LED)

Also, do you know if the refund policy is the same between US and Canada?

Here is the Dell CA return policy taken directly from their site:

    http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/policy?c=ca&l=en&s=gen&~section=018

Look's like you have 30 days, if I'm reading it right ;)

Oh, they say you can be charged a 15% restocking fee....but most of the time, they don't :D

If you are going to return, you want to get the process started ASAP ;)

Thank you Cin, we'll see how I like the unit. I am just really annoy'd with the overseas agents that I cannot understand. But I know that all too well working for HP myself lol

    Thank you again :)
