I installed Windows 8 last night and have come to realise very quickly that without a touchscreen I would be happier going back to Windows 7 as the workflow without a touchscreen doesn't quite feel right to me (stuck in my ways!).

Considering all the hassle of reinstalling and setting back up how I like my system configured, I do wonder if it would be easier to stick with Windows 8 and instead look at changing my screen again (have upgraded to a matt 1920x1080 screen a while ago).

Looking with the help of search I can find references to the L501x originally being offered with a touchscreen as an option, but looking in the dissasembly manual on dell's site there is no mention of the touch screen as far as I can tell.

If anyone in this forum has any experience of the L501x with a touchscreen and has been delving inside the laptops innards would be interested to hear any info on how it is setup internally with cables etc compared to a standard L501x.

If I glean any more info in the meantime I will pop it in here incase anyone else is considering this and may be of help to them too.

    Chris

Just had a look again and my skimming of the manual left me missing the mention of the digitizer connection on the motherboard! Looks like there's hope! I'm going to pop my keyboard and palmrest off and take a look and see if the socket is present on my motherboard and will report back in a bit.

The header socket is there (on a basic i3 system). Next problem will be if there is a screen with a built in digitizer that has the same cable that could plug directly into the l501x motherboard header or have a new plug put on there to change the wire pin outs to match.
