My travel remote isn't working anymore, I think it's because I got a system replacement. Do the remotes get "linked" to the system they are first used with by chance? Any ideas on how to fix it? This is on a SXPS 1645.
-
I have two travel remotes. Either both got linked to my last 1645, or there's something wrong with my new 1645.
-
It should work independently unless Dell has changed.
-
Aren't the travel remotes simple IR? If so then there is no linking that needs to be done....assuming the 1645 has an IR receiver. Is this the remote that fits in the Express Card slot? If so then may be worth checking the battery is in place as I noticed my M1330 remote was a bit of a pain to get in properly.
You may want to check you have quickset installed too, although not sure if this is needed. -
Yes they are simple IR, I got the new remote and it still isn't working. Gaah! I will check on the QuickSet thing and if I have to, open it up and make sure the connection is there. Is there a way to test the IR transceiver?
-
Is it the remote from the M1530?
I got a remote, and it looked like my M1330 remote (M1530 had the same remote) and it didn't work with my XPS 16. Called them, and they're sending me the newer remote. -
I reinstalled QuickSet64 - it's now working properly! And I have two extra for sell.
-
btw, what model is your remote? i have a 1645 sxps
-
Dell P/N NU851
-
It's designed for XPS 16/13, 1730M, 1530, and all other systems with an IR receiver (it's in the front). Currently this is the latest model of the remote.

I got a few offers from posting it here, fell through. Now it's on eBay, thanks. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290389753807&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT $20/each.

I just received a NU851 remote but it's not doing anything when I press the buttons. I've reinstalled QuickSet64 to no avail. Anyone else have any other suggestions? I can see the IR diode in the remote emitting a signal through my camera. So the remote does appear to be working. Are there any other software or driver(s) that I need to load? I've tried reinstalling the IR drivers as well.
-
I cant find NU851 on Dell's website. All I can find is NU991 on Dell's website.
Will the NU991 fit the XPS 1645 without sticking out? It says it is for the Studio 13, so I assume yes... -
Make sure to use the Quickset64 from Dell's 1645 support page, in case you're using the Quickset64 from my 'most recent driver updates' topic I don't think it supports the remote control, but I haven't confirmed the old version does either anymore. I suspect it's either that or there's been a BIOS change or something else changed that has disabled the remote sensor.
BTW the XPS 13 remote is actually the NU851 and it used to work with the XPS 16, currently mine isn't working again either. (fresh batteries and all) -
That theory didn't pan out here, old version of Quickset64 doesn't work either (and I'm confident newer versions worked before, as well). I have no idea what is responsible for the change.
ExpressCard Remote on XPS 16 and Quickset64 versions
10.6.2 - doesn't work
9.6.8 - doesn't work anymore either
Tested with new and old battery. Officially I don't think Dell ever marketed the XPS 16 with a ExpressCard remote either, other than the Bluetooth enabled one. The RF features I never saw put to use on the XPS 16 even if the one marketed for the XPS 13 worked for awhile. I have no other devices to test the RF functionality out on to confirm it even works anymore, but device drivers do show up on the Device Manager last time I checked. meh.
edit: My belief is recent changes in the BIOS have changed the behavior of the RF sensor and special Dell keys and input settings, and that is probably the culprit. -
Er... so this remote is now just a slot filler? Anyone else have any luck?

QuickSet has nothing to do with the IR receiver or remote. Here's what I did to get my NU991 remote working with my 1647:
1) Installed the latest IR drivers from Windows Update. (Windows Update's version was newer than Dell's version, but I'm sure Dell's version will work too.)
2) Download the Dell drivers here and extract the files.
3) In the INFDrv folder (C:\dell\drivers\R227772\INFDrv), you will see a couple registry files. Run the one called InstallRegistry and then reboot. (This is the most important step.)
I think this should get the NU851 remote working as well. Also, one sure way to find out if the remote works with your system to turn your computer off and press the power button on the remote. If the computer turns on, then the remote works with your system. If it then doesn't work after booting into Windows, you probably have some driver/configuration issues. You most likely need to run the InstallRegistry file as described above.
Jedis, the NU991 fits the SXPS16 perfectly. It sticks out a millimeter or two, but nothing drastic like some of the reviews stated. It also snaps in and doesn't slide out or fall out as some have stated. -
thanks for the help codester, I confirmed my remote still works by testing the power button. It turns the machine on fine. Will mess with the driver later (been running with just the WU version this time around).
edit: further confirmed that it works fine after InstallRegistry.reg is added to the registry, and it works even after uninstalling Quickset64 as well. cheers for the information (must admit I didn't check into it much after having not used it and had problems with it before). -
I can confirm that codester's instructions on post 18 fixed it for me.
