- I have a Dell XPS M1530 and recently installed Windows 7
- Last night I plugged in my smartphone for the first time, then the USB ports seemed to stop working.
- USB mice don't light up, phones don't charge
- This also includes the built in fingerprint scanner and bluetooth module, which I suspect is linked to the USB internally.
Also:
-System restore is off (Yup, I am an idiot)
-Dell factory restore has gone (Since installing Windows 7)
I have gone through 4 blank DVDs, trying to make a copy of Windows 7... But something always seems to go wrong. My hope was to wipe the hard drive clean and freshly install everything again.
Note: Yes I am aware that downloading and copying Windows may be illegal, but I have every intention to pay to activate the operating system.
Any suggestions? I am really stuck...

Such an odd error. But yeah, I'd say you are up the creek without a paddle.

Too right you are. Such a shame too, since I was really making a cool city in Simy City 4... The touchpad just doesn't do it for me!
-
You've checked the bios settings I assumed.
And your city isn't loss. Just don't format the partition when you select Custom Install. Setup will move all your old files into a single folder and you can just copy and paste your city files from there. -
Here's what I suggest you at least try. Take out the power cord from the notebook and also remove the battery, wait 10 minutes, plug everything back in and check the USB ports after that. My M1330 experienced the same symptoms and removing it from the power adapter as well as taking out the battery solved the issue. It comes back now and then, but I now know what to do to solve it.

Didn't see anything useful relating to USB in the BIOS. Unfortunately Daemon tools lite doesn't work since I installed Windows 7, could you recommend an alternative program to read the Windows 7.iso? All of them seem to be weak "free trials" that don't let me do much.
I just tried unplugging the laptop for 10 minutes and still no luck -
powerISO my fav !

Does a Linux live cd recognize a usb device?
If so then it just might be a windows 7 problem...could be related to libusb-win32 that needs to be removed in add/remove program.

OH WOW, THANKS. I completely forgot about Libusb-win32... I had it installed to use my PS3 pad for IL-2 Sturmovik.
I had no idea it would be the culprit. How strange. I cannot thank you enough... You saved my hard drive from being wiped!
Note to anyone who stumbles accross this:
Uninstall Libusb-win32
Merry Christmas. -
I've never heard of this program.......
Ughhh......... -
It's really cool if you want to play games with a PS3 pad... Until it goes and does this of course. D:<

Interesting. I've always hated console controllers, but I got a PS3 controller handy...
USB ports borked. Clueless.
