Hey guys, im about to do some overclocking myself, but i ran into some problems already..
First of all, i want to update my graphic driver from 174.31 (factory) to 174.74, because i heard that the 174.74 is like the best one or something.
So i been following this guide:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3391216&postcount=1572
But i can't find nv4_disp.inf file?![]()
![]()
So im stuck there..
And i dont want to start overclocking until i get the best driver..![]()
Can someone post a link to the Overclocking and Stability Guide too?
If anyone has any advice on updating drivers or overclocking would be great!
Thanks alot!![]()

I did it a minute ago
I deleted any that had 'setup information' as the file type
Then I replaced it with the one called 'nvdm' from the OEM INF pack -
Yeah look for "original inf's" zip file. And NVDM is in there.

I don't know where you heard that, but it doesn't mean it applies to all graphic cards. The 8600M runs very well on the 174.31 drivers. In fact, it's the best ones I've found so far, and OC'ing on these drivers is a painless procedure. There's also no modded INFs, which I've found can harm performance/features on some setups, such as not keeping your nView settings when you restart.
My recommendation: stick with the 174.31 drivers provided by Dell, and use ATITool to OC. I doubt you'll be able to squeeze any more performance out of the 8600M using different drivers.
My maximum OC is 685/1000 for GPU/MEM respectively. It runs stable at about 3 C hotter than stock settings. OC'ing any more than this produces artifacts. -
Agreed on 174.31. Don't fix it if it ain't broken.
-
I don't see where everyone's getting DELL Nvidia driver version 174.31 from. The Dell's site still has 156.63 listed when I search for my graphics card drivers. I tried the 175.80 beta drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com but my battery life went from 2.5hrs to 1.5hrs using them.
-
Seriously guys? Stay with the 174.31?
I am planning on using RivaTuner to OC it -
Yeah - where do you find the driver info?
-
RivaTuner works as well. Although, I _highly_ recommend you use ATITools instead, as it features artifact discovery. VERY useful for OC'ing to make sure there's no artifacts at your new clock speeds!
-
ATI Tools lets you overclock nvidia cards?
-
Yes, ATITools does. ATI Tray Tools does not.
-
Wow - they need to change their product name. Thanks.
-
It was originally designed for ATI cards, but the creators must have added NVIDIA support later on.
-
Doesn't seem to work for me. I loaded it, it complained about "Kernel Mode Driver" not running.
-
What drivers?
-
Also, I'm running XP - and not Vista. That's probably why it says "Kernel Mode Driver" not running, as Vista has the drivers in "User Mode" - this is a "security feature" with Vista.
I assume RivaTuner will still work? -
Yeah - that's probably the difference.
-
yeah rivatuner will work on XP
Well it works fine for me on 174.74 -
Yep, I support this as well. Even as of today, 174.31 seems to be best working I've got with no issues at all. (please check the laptopvideo2go as well, and there you will see many people reverting back to this which I think might make you feel assured). And as Halkyon and others said, stick with it and get it updated once Dell releases a newer one... just to be safe than sorry. But please do let us know if you tried something else that worked as well as this and probably it would be useful tip for others too
Good luck and cheers.
