Do we have confirmation that we will be able to upgrade the GPU in the 1730 once the 9800s or above come out?

My dad is going to buy me a dell but he doesn't want to spend the money on SLI 8800s or even SLI 8700s. So, if he gets me a 1730 with a 1x8700GT now, will I be able to upgrade for sure to SLI 9800M GTX's when they come out?

Sorry if this is answered elsewhere... I really did look!

I would not expect an upgrade to be available to the 9800's, laptops tend to be around 12 months behind in technology terms, compared with desktops.

The only upgrade path was supposed to be from the early 8700 adopters to the 8800.

So my advice would be to get the 8800's SLI, or wait for the next gen laptop to become available (8-12 months at a guess).

Ok, new question but similar topic....

I have read alot of different information out there regarding the current cost of upgrading the 1730 to SLI 8800s... [$2k what????]

I am about to have a 1730 bouight for me but it will likely only have 1 8700GT in it. Should I chip in the extra $1K for upgrading to the SLI 8800s or should I just wait around 6mos to a year and upgrade to SLI 8800s then?

Basically, is it reasonable to think that upgrading from a single 8700GT to SLI 8800GTXs will be cheaper than $1K in 8 mos to 1 year?

I don't need the SLI 8800s now but I will in the future to make this bad boy last a few years. Thanks for the input.

It's def cheaper to order the laptop with the 8800's now than later. You may be able to find a pair of 8800's down the road (on ebay, maybe), but don't expect them to come cheap.

Can anyone else comment on what the cost for upgrading to SLI 8800s will be in 6 mos or so? I know its just a guess but surely it will come down from $2K, especially as the 9800s near...

I would get them now, the aftermarket price on them is rediculous and not likely to drop all that much. Heck the 8700's suck and they are still going for a decent price.

As far as the 9800's being near, I wouldn't hold your breath. It was over a year from the time the 8800 gtx desktop cards were released to the time we saw the first 8800m GTX's.
