kinda pointless wouldnt you say?? i mean if you want to stream large files over the network (wireless N) i would but if not it would be just a waste IMO.

Yes, it is possible old chap. I have doen it and it is running much fasternow... (300mb/s vs the old 130mb/s max of the 4965) All you need to do is note the location of the current antenna cables and then put them back onto the new card, same places :) If i can help more drop a hint :)

Yes, but I don't think any existing routers support 450mbs. There might be one coming out soon -- forgot what brand.

TrendNet and D-Link...that's the one coming out.....maybe after the second half of the year.

I'm also looking for 5300 wifi card. sad thing is, i think it still doesn't exist here in the Philippines.

How much did you get your 5300 btw?

    I got mine here: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149424

However it was a fiver cheaper. Definately worth it in my opinion + I hear it uses less power (probably not noticeable though)

I doubt it's free to the Phillippines.

Off topic: Why is it "the" Phillippines????

Edit: I think it´s because "The Phillippine Islands", not sure.

This would be a pointless upgrade unless you had a router like the Linksys WRT610N which can fully support the Intel 5300.

The only benefit would be if your router can do the following like the Likesys WRT610N:

The way this card works is that it uses both the 5GHz and the 2.4GHz bands at the exact same time, to get high bandwidth. 150MBps 2.4GHz Band + 300MBps 5GHz Band = 450MBps.

Now if you have a router that does not support both bands at the same time, or not the 5GHz band at all. Then the 5300 card will do nothing to help you. Stick with what you have unless it is broken.

Personally, now a days the 2.4GHz band is so flooded with traffic from other 2.4GHz devices such as cordless phones, wireless routers, microwaves, etc... That I just disable the 2.4GHz band on my router, run exclusively in the 5GHz band, with just the 300MBps speed from that band. It works great, is fast, and best of all - NO INTERFERENCE!. (At least until more crap goes on the 5GHz band and floods it.)

The 4965 card you already have supports 5GHz to by the way, just not both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz at the same time. (As long as you have the AGN verson and not the AG version). If you have the AG version, then yes definately upgrade! - The AG version does not support wireless N at all!

There are a few other small benefits of upgrading, but again your router needs to support it and to the typical home user won't notice any difference at all.

I just did this over the weekend. The reason is because my router is the DIR 655 which only supports 2.4ghz band. The 4965 does not allow 40mhz on the 2.4 band - the 5300 allows this.

It has significantly improved my transfer speed to my NAS (DNS 323), which means I can now stream some higher quality videos.

Of course, the screw (m2x3mm) holding in the 4965 had locktite(?) on it and became stripped. I just dropped the 5300 in the WAN slot and moved the antennas.

I called dell about the stripped screws and I would have had to send it into a depot to get them removed. It was just easier to use the WAN slot.

Here we don´t have the 5 Ghz Band. It´s reserved for commercial flights (!) communication!

As a note, I've been getting solid 300mbps connections over 5GHz to a D-Link WGL-4500 using my 4965 for some time... overall, very impressed.

That's a normal size WiFi Link 5300. AFAIK, Studio XPS requires the half-height version of that card. It's slightly hard to find it compared to the ordinary full-height version. But it's there somewhere on ebay. I've bought it for my Studio 17. Only it costs a little bit more...

I've been searching for a half-height card as well. But yea, as you said, they are extremely rare.
I tried to look for the model number on dell site also, but somehow on the product page for the intel 5300, they say it is a half-height card, but the picture shows a mini-card.

hey, thanks for the link. They do have the half-height card. It's weird I bookmarked that seller long ago for the mini-card but never found the half height. :))
