I bought my M1330 in December, I'm wondering can I upgrade it to a Penryn chip? The lower power and cooler operation would be nice, I did a search on Google and found a site selling them and it stated that the CPU was incompatible with previous chips, is this true, or would it work?
-
Works just fine. I've had a T9300 in my m1330 for a month now with no problems. I runs cooler and battery life increased a little as well.
-
Superb! Thanks for the info
Do you notice any speed increase, or is it really too small to notice? -
where did you find them at?
-
I couldn't find the site I found a couple of days ago, but found this site which has them: http://www.zebracomputers.co.uk/mobile-core-duo-c846.html
They have the new 1600FSB chips as well apparently. -
These guys are a bit cheaper.

Fantastic service, though the t9500 seems to have gone awol. -
Are there any US sites selling them?
-
Where did you get the T9300 from?
Thanks! -

How big of a deal is it to swap the CPU? (Dang, there goes my warranty).

For $919 You can get a FULL PENRYN BASED laptop, give it's T9300 but still!!!!

for ES version, you could get it much cheaper, just google 'Q9WW T9500' (revision C0).

A CPU swap on a 1330 is really easy. Its just one panel and then the fan assembly. If you do a search for it you can easily google the repair manual for the 1330, it will literally take you step by step through everything.
Duffyaneal: is there any particular bios that you use for the T9300?
Does that Networld dude have a storefront? I'm a little hesitant to try to buy something like that from some dude in who knows where.
Does anyone have any idea when some of the major internet vendors might carry some Penryn upgrade CPUs? (NewEgg, ZZF, Tiger Direct....) -
Btw, here are a few pics of the M1330 incl. one of the heatpipe and underlying chips. -
Did I overlook something? -
-
A 'review' of this vendor would be great. I'm inclined to 'pull the trigger' on a T9500, currently doing my research.... -
Although all three are certainly fast enough, I'd aim for the T9300 'cause of its 6MB shared cache. The T9500 is not yet available here, but if it was, I'm certain most of us couldn't afford it... -
t9500 isn't this it? or no?
XPS M1330 Qty 1

There was a recent review of a T8100 equipped Toshiba which was praised for it's gaming performance by Laptopmag.com. I think all of these processors will provide good performance.

duffyanneal, have you heared any cpu whine in your t9300?
-
Will keep you posted as this one has to last me a long time or
I will be divorced...lol -
My M1330 runs a lot hotter than I like so I would have loved to have moved to .45nm and the extra performance boost doesn't hurt either. Oh well, I guess I will wait for Montevina. -
I purchased mine here:
http://www.grassrootscomputers.com/INTEL_CPU_CORE_2_DUO_T9300_2.50GHZ/BX80576T9300/partinfo-id-348869.html
It arrived next day and i installed it into my Sony Vaio AR570. Works great and definetly runs cooler. No bios update needed either... swap-n-play. -
-
as for the penryn chips they will be available everywhere for retail at the end of the month. Im gonna drop a 2.5ghz in my m1530 when it releases. It is something like $350. I was gonna wait to order my m1530 when it came out but the only difference is the processor. So it is actually cheaper to sell my current processor and buy this. -
-
Hi all, I wanted to bring this thread back up to the top as I just ordered a T9300 to relpace my T7500. As has been mentioned, I will need to replace the thermal pads once I remove the heatsink. I've been looking all over for replacements and haven't had any luck. Am I stuck going through Dell for these?
I did purchase a tube of Artic Silver, I guess there's no chance I could just use that and tighten the heatsink down a little further...
Any advice is appreciated, the CPU will be here in a day or two
Thanks,
Chris -
The CPU itself uses good ol' thermal paste and you've already got that covered with your Arctic(I used my own Arctic 5 when my mobo was recently swapped out but to be honest, I didn't see any measurable decrease in core temps...).
The whole process should take about 10-15mins. The screws around the zif socket are numbered and I assume should be mounted (& unmounted) in sequence (& I suggeest you start with the one screw over by the GPU before doing the ZIF-socket.)
Before you go through with it, please use some "standard" method to note your temps @load (using TAT, for example) and try to do a A/B (before & after test in similar ambient temps). Be sure to let the Arctic properly "settle" before reporting the Penryn temps as Arctic must be allowed to cool down once before it is at it's best (i.e. power down the Notebook for a few hours, or better yet, overnight).
Let us know how you fare with that little puppy -
Am curous, Whats the difference between "OEM" and "Retail" CPU chips?
I know seperately what OEM - (manufacturer) and Retail are but not what the difference between and OEM CPU chip and a retail is.. -
Thanks for the info!
I will definitely post my results once I get everything installed and stable. I don't know if you saw d94s post, but here are stock readings (i.e. factory installed Merom vs. factory installed penryn)
t7300 idle @ 36C load @ 78C
t9300 idle @ 27C load @ 61C
Quite a difference if you ask me. It will be interesting to see what battery life will be between the two. Is there a program that would accurately measure that?
Chris -
Sorry, I don't know of an accurate way to measure battery life but there are a few options where you can do your own A/B. One example is running a CPU-intensive benchmark. For example, any of Futuremark's benchmarking tools will give your CPU(s) a good workout. Just loop it 'till your battery hits the critically low value. Better yet, choose a tool that is almost purely CPU-intensive, like a Pi calculator or Sandra's cpu benchmark. -
I'm looking to upgrade my t7250 to a t9300. Just to check a few things:
1 - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=751134 best UK price considering I get free delivery?
2 - I have AS5 + isopropyl alcohol for the processor and I can reuse the thermal pads
3 - It will run at the full 2.5Ghz despite the RAM being neutered to 677
4 - Where is the dell repair guide? Can anyone link me please?
5 - I can expect better battery life from this processor?
Cheers guys -
-
Can you PM me that info too please?
Cheers! -
Ok, here it goes then if more people are interested:
1. It is better to use a thermal paste rather than the same pads.
2. It runs at full 2.5GHz
3. Link for Dell guide:
http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor...ems_info/en/manuals?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs
4. Battery life is a bit better and it runs much cooler and more silent (the fan barely starts now). -
do you have website or phone number to order ! -
today i removed my t7300 and installed a t9300, and i noticed that the batery meter, shows less minutes at full charge, same power settings, is this normal, i read that penryn consumes less power, but a 7300 is smaller than a 9300, so i dont know if a reduction in about 10 to 15 percent in batery life is normal, or are ther some setings in the bios that i have to adjust?
thanks -
so what are you guys doing with your olds chips? anyone would like to sell me your old one? i have a t5250
-
-
2. Penryn is better in term of undervolting. Read undervolting guide from here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824. There is a risk so read whole thing and only do it if you are understand the risk.
I am undervolting my T5250 to 0.95v and I am very happy especially run 10 degree cooler now. Battery status soft show 2:26 for full charge.(6 cell)
I am also thinking to get Penryn. -
i think despite the battery power loss, that penryn has ben a wise decicion for me -
-
Hi there!
I have a couple questions for you:
1 - Can I upgrade a Dell XPS M1530 from a merom t7250 (2.0Ghz 2MB L2) to a penryn t9300 ( 2.5 6MB L2)? (I assume is the same work you did with the M1330)
2 - Do you think the difference will be big? Do you think it is woth doing it?
Thanks! -
i own a T8300, it is worth the upgrade to a T9300?
