My 1530 is an anemic slug (see sig). I'm toying around with the idea of getting a motherboard off ebay with the 8600m 256MB video. I just wonder if it's worth it? Will there be a significant increase in performance? Heat?

Can a Penryn compatible use a Merom processor? I'd probably stay with my T5550 until I could afford a newer penryn, something along the lines of a P8400 or so. Nothing outrageous (no xtremes). Not a gaming rig or anything just get tired of it being so slow.

Big performance increase. The 8600m gt ddr3 will destroy your 8400m gs. I get about 4950 3dmark06 stock clocks. I am sure that it is also hotter than your current card tho.

How exactly is the machine slow? If this slowness isn't exclusive to gaming, swapping your 8400M motherboard with an 8600M motherboard isn't going to help anything. You're probably better off doing a clean install or something along those lines...
