I recently purchased the core i5 version of the xps12 which came with a 128gb ssd drive. After having and seeing how much space was available I realized that this drive is just too small to make this system useful. I really like it and want to upgrade the ssd to a 240gb or 256gb drive. I have a couple of questions about how to do this. Will any ssd drive work or is a proprietary size? If I can just purchase a 2.5in drive does it need to be 7mm or 9mm? How would I get my windows installation onto it? Do I go thru the procedure to create an iso of the windows install and then install from and external dvd drive or usb stick? Will this cause an issue with the windows activating?

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
I'm pretty sure the XPS 12 takes a standard mSATA drive... you can see it in the service manual: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-prod..._laptop/xps-12-l221x_Owner's Manual_en-us.pdf
You can install Windows exactly as you said, with an external optical drive or a USB stick. You will probably need to activate it again, but how you install Windows should not affect that process. -
Correct, it is an mSATA drive - NOT 2.5in

Thanks for the info. It was a very easy install.
