I have a Studio XPS 1640, RGB 1080p and T9600 w/ 8G RAM. IS it possible and is it worth it to upgrade to an i7 CPU?

Not possible. The CPU socket is different, and the chipset is incompatible. You'd need a 1645.

    You could upgrade to:
2.80GHz P9700 (same speed, more battery life)
    2.93GHz T9800
    3.06GHz T9900
3.06GHz X9100 (might not be as efficient as T9900)
    2.00GHz Q9000 (quad-core)
    2.23GHZ Q9100 (quad-core)
    2.40GHz Q9200 (quad-core)
    2.53GHz QX9300 (quad-core)

but I'm afraid those are your only options when it comes to upgrading the T9600.

What about my case; I may be interested in upgrading to a quad core from my i5-460m in the future. What options do I have?

for a quad-core replacement of a dual-core Arrandale such as the i5-460M, your computer must have a dedicated graphics card.

Assuming it does, you can upgrade to:
    1.60GHz i7-720QM (6MB Cache)
    1.73GHz i7-740QM (6MB Cache)
    1.73GHz i7-820QM (8MB Cache)
    1.86GHz i7-840QM (8MB Cache)
    2.00GHz i7-920XM (8MB Cache)
    2.13GHz i7-940XM (8MB Cache)

Ok thanks, I was always under the impression i5 could only upgrade to another i5 and not a quad. So they all have the same sockets?

They share the same socket and the same chipset. With the 1645/1647, you can't go from dual to quad or quad to dual, but that is because of something in the BIOS, nothing hardware wise. With the XPS15, because they sell both i5 and i7 quad under the same model number, you should have no problems.
