the only cards available to you are:

    8700M GT
    8800M GTX
    9800M GT
    9800M GTX

    That is all... :(

No, the highest for the M1730 is the 9800M GTX SLI - which is NOT worth upgrading to unless if money isn't in your vocabulary. :p The 9800M GTX SLI won't yield much performance for the amount you pay if you plan to upgrade to it.

Your 9800M GT SLI is already a good card to begin with. Stick with it, this also goes to anyone else with 8800M GTXes.

If your friend has the 8700M GT SLI then yes, the 9800M GT SLI would be a worthwhile upgrade (if he can locate the card - they are hard to find - there aren't any on eBay at the moment).

If your friend has the 8800M GTX SLI, then don't bother. There really isn't a difference.

There's actually one one card technically, if it has SLI then it's two "cards" in one board, if it doesn't have SLI then it's one card on one board.

M1730 will still last for some time, i wouldn't be overly scared... But if you want the best of the best that is available right now, then Alienware or Clevo would be for you.

I purchased an xps m1730 with the sli 8700m gt. I called Dell and asked about upgrading to the 8800m gtx sli. They told me to do that they would have to swap out the entire motherboard because the cards are integrated. But I've watched videos on youtube showing people upgrading the 8700m gt to the 8800m gtx on the xps m1730 and what I was seeing was the video cards were it's own module that you could pull out. Is this correct or am I going to have to get a whole new mobo to upgrade?

The cards are INTEGRATED?! They told you that? That is a load of BS. LOL I have said this on the forums here about couple of threads back, I have changed a guy's 2 year old M1730 from a -and pathetic- single 8700M GT to dual 9800M GTs. The cards are removable. ALL M1730s are armed with removable -and proprietary- GPUs designed by Dell. Ignore that rep who told you that crap.

Buy the card from ebay. - It's cheaper or you can ask Dell for it... Change it yourself.. Anyway My point is. It is NOT integrated or "soldered to the motherboard". They don't know a dime about what an M1730 is, and most alarmingly, I don't know how they get their job as a tech support.
