    Hey,

I plan on upgrading my harddrive on my Dell XPS M1710 laptop as I don't really want to carry around an external one, but I don't really know which one'll work so I need help figuring that out. As of right now I have a Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 100GB 7200RPM SATA harddrive. My laptop has the Intel 945PM chipset and according to the Intel website it supports "SATA 150".

Now, does that mean a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 harddrive would work if I just plugged it in (seeing as it's SATA II)? I remember reading that SATA would be compatible with each version but I want to be sure before purchasing a harddrive.

    Cheers

I'm pretty sure that the newer SATA drive would be compatible with the older-spec chipset in the M1710. You won't be seeing the speed increase of SATA 2, but the drive should work just fine.

Also, good choice of drive; I'm planning on getting two of those for my M1730.

Yes, the SATA II spec is backward compatible with SATA 150.
