Hi I was wondering If i got a XPS m1530 with something like a T8300 CPU, will it be compatible if i self-upgraded it to a T-9600?
(cost isn't a big issue, it is through work related budget and if I don't spend the money I don't get to keep it.)

You can get any Socket P processor with an FSB of 800MHz or less. This group of processors does NOT include the T9600, but it DOES include the T9300 and T9500.

Hey guys. I was wondering about this a day or so ago. And here it is!

I was considering possibly upgrading my processor as well and currently have a T7500. Assuming that 2.6 GHz is the highest one could go with a M1530 since that's the highest chip with an 800 FSB, would 2.6 be a dramatic improvement over a 2.2? Or is it not even worth it?

The fastest 800MHz FSB processor with respect to flat out clock speed is the C2E X7900 at 2.800GHz. However, I'm inclined to believe that the fastest 800MHz FSB processor with respect to overall performance is the C2D T9500 at 2.600GHz.

Compared to the T7500, the T9500 is about 20 percent faster (judging from their respective wPrime benches), but it will ALSO draw a bit less power and therefore run cooler. Depending on what you're doing you may or may not (and probably not in most cases) see a real-life difference in performance; unless you can get the T9500 cheap, it's probably not worth it.

Save your money. I upgraded from a T7250 to a T9300 and I really didn't notice a performance increase. The jump from 2gb to 4gb was definitely worth it. The upgrade to a 7200rpm drive was definitely worth it, but if I were to do it all over again I would have stuck with the 2.0GHz processor.

Thanks guys! Very informative. I have a 320GB Scorpio Black 7200 RPM coming in the mail this week. I'll see how that does before considering overhauling the CPU. Probably won't. Thanks again!
