    Hey,

I've ran out of warranty on my XPS and I'm having some problems with my optical drive so I'd like to replace that with a new DVD burner or possibly a Blu-Ray combo drive, but I'm not sure which ones work or if I really have to order from Dell and pay their prices or do other manufacturers sell compatible drives for laptop?

Also, is changing the optical drive as easy as HDD on the XPS (few screws, pull out, put the new drive in)?

    Cheers

You dont need to pay to them for the drive if you want to purchase it somewhere else, and if you are going to do that, just make sure that it is the same size, and the connection has to be IDE, and it is really simple to replace the DVD drive, just remove one screw and you are ready to go, here are the instructions:

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsM1710/en/SM/opdrive.htm#wp999869

and if you plan to buy one from Dell, here is where you can order it:

    Best Regards...

Thanks for the guides, what I meant was if laptop DVD/CD drives are sold normally in regular computer stores but from what it seems like they just go by the name "SLIM" -- Obviously I don't wanna buy it from Dell as they charge ridiculous prices.
