Hello everybody, well since my 1-year warranty is coming to an end and the price of the warranty extension is ridiculous so I am planning on doing some upgrading on my M1530.

Now, firstly I do have the Nvidia Gefore 8400 128mb card and I do realize a lot of the 8600M cards had the faulty GPU.

But I am willing to take the risk and upgrade it, but searching ebay.com there are a lot of motherboards with all sorts of numbers.

    Some are N028D, F125f, MU715, F124F and so on.

Is there anything specific I should look into when ordering a motherboard? do they all come with a standard specification, besides the upgrade options of ram/processor/wireless card that a person may add on extra while ordering?

I just don't want to order a motherboard and have the wrong one and loose out certain functionality.

Has anybody done this before that they could share some help/experience?

    Thank you
    bart

The 8400 and 8600 motherboards are going to be pretty much the same, with respect to how they fit the rest of the laptop. Don't worry about the N028D or F125F,etc, just look for, you know, "M1530 motherboard with 8600GT" or whatever. They should all fit. The only other part you may need to replace is the heatsink. I'm not sure if 8600 M1530s were fitted with a bigger/different heatsink than 8400 M1530s.

Do not put more money into something that is doomed to fail (and if it doesn't, well, overheating isn't any fun either). If you really want a computer for something gpu intensive, this isn't it. It simply gets too hot with its terrible thermal design. Just save for a sxps 16 or M15x. (8600m gt idling at 67 Celcius as I type this)

Don't all Nvidia M1530's get an automatic 1 year warranty extension? Or does that only apply for the ones that were sold prior to the issue being known?

mr.rhtuner, I'm simply curious and don't mean any offense, but would you mind if I asked why you bought an M1530 in 2009, instead of an SXPS 16?

With my 8400 GPU in there, it runs fine, no problems yet *knock on wood*
Not doing anything graphic intensive, just want to swap the board for the better gpu, increase the processor and ram. I'm going to school in Sept for computer systems technology so I need a good unit for the time being.

I might stick with the factory motherboard and just search around for a good price on ram and processor

I believe the xps16 wasn't out at the time I was buying mine...

I think you should keep the 8400 if its been good, but go ahead and get a better cpu and more ram. I bought this with a c2d 2 Ghz 667 fsb, and it's a bit slow, but the 4 gbs of ram is sufficient. If your planning on keeping it for a while, the best thing you can do for it would be to get Windows 7.

Sorry I don't understand what you mean by that?

I've been browsing ebay for the 'perfect' motherboard and a good price but I came across a question from other threads and this might deter me from doing a motherboard swap.

I have the m1530 with the 8400 card in there, if I buy a motherboard for the m1530 with the 8600 gpu, will my heat sink and fan setup work from the 8400 properly on the 8600?

Hi, I am in the process of upgrading my XPS m1530. It has the 128mb 8400GT mainboard. I am contemplating if the heatsink assembly is sufficient.

So far I have a replacement board with 8600GT, part no 0F125F, LCD top cover because the black one was blemished, LCD bezel because it it broken, WD Scorpio Black 500gb HDD, C2D T8300 processor, bluetooth adapter with cable and mouse buttons. The replacement board came with a thermal pad but I am thinking of using arctic silver in its place.

What do all of you think? Do I have to get another heatsink assembly?

    Dell XPS m1530 - C2D T5250 1.5ghz, 4gb DDR-2 667, 15.4 CCFL LCD WXGA+ with TrueLife, WD Scorpio Blue 250gb, 128mb 8400GT.
