I'm curious if it's possible to actually order the BD-RE drive from dell directly? I see some after-market vendors of course, but curious as to if it's actually directly orderable through Dell? And well, how to go about it, since I'm blind as a bat if it's actually on the website :).

I'm having major issue with the BD-RE drive in my m1530.

The drive is slot loading and has failed on me 5 times now, They won't send me the drive to install myself since the case is designed to have the slot part cut to fit the drive. So really the drive sits in the case and i'm not sure if the m1730 is the same or if it's one of those drives that can be replaced like a hard drive.

Some other food for though if you decide to do this MAKE SURE it can burn dual layer dvd discs sine there are two drives out there.

    The M1730 Uses a tray-loader, specifically the UJ-220.

    I believe you're referencing the UJ-225?

Not sure regarding issues with playing blu-rays, but I haven't heard 'great' things about it either.

Regarding my own question, just bit the bullet and actually called. And the answer is really no, and even if so, not worth it with what Dell would mark up the sale over point of purchase :).

    So 3rd Party it is.
