Hi evryone..
i'm a newbie here, not quite acquainted with ne2 around..anyway..
i've gotta buy a notebook...
i've chosen these two lappies. the Dell XPS M1330 and the Dell XPS M1530. one a 13.3" n other a 15.4".
basically i need a laptop which i can occasionally carry n shudnt be much of a pain. like i shud b able to squeeze with n use it comforatbly in a car, or any other situation like dat.
Now that Dell has introduced the 15.4" one too, i'm pretty confused.
Will I feel the difference when carrying a 13.3" n a 15.4" notebook? will i really feel the 15.4" one heavy when carrying around? i usually like the personal feeling one gets when using a small size display notebook, but will i really miss the 15.4" display advantage over the 13.3" one?
Help me guyz, plz...
my dadz onna come in a week frm abroad, n he'll b tugging any one of 'em along with him..so plz hurry up...

Dell hasn't released all of the screen options for the M1530 yet. As is currently available the 15.4" screen has the same number of pixels as the 13.3" M1330 screen. Therefore you are not really gaining much by going the M1530 route... (at least right now)
More than the weight difference you might feel the battery life difference between the two.. M1530 will have noticeably less battery life.. We don't have exact metrics yet since there are no reviews but we should know hopefully soon... (based on the environmental data sheet Dell has published, M1530 consumes almost 3 times as much power as the M1330)
The M1330 is obviously a proven product that got rave reviews. M1530 is new .. we don't know how it will do yet. It is a really nice design but doesn't add a lot of new features in my book over a competitor like the Mac Book Pro or a Vaio FZ.
I went for the M1330. If you decide to go for the M1530 (which you could, they are very similar notebooks), you should wait until higher resolution screens are available from Dell than the 1280x800. What you do gain with the M1530 right now is a noticeably cheaper price. The upgrades are much cheaper there specially if you vote for the LED on the M1330. But considering the size of the two you would expect the bigger to be cheaper. -
When you use either on a desk, you can connect upto a 24" widescreen external monitor courtesy of the HDMI port. For this reason, and for it's maturity in both development and build quality, I would opt for the M1330.

@ praneeth..
thanx buddy..but i guess u didnt get my point. my confusion is with the size n form factor. not the quality of the screen.
duz the 15.4" notebook has a really larger footprint than 13.3" or its jus a slight difference?
wel, u do have a M1330? wow...kewl ! howz it like? n have u opted 4 the LED one? where did u purchase it frm? n wots de cost n ur onfig?
thanx again... -
Only pic I could find to compare is the one attached.
You can see more here: http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/11/27/36410.aspx
I don't think the footprint will be that much bigger IMO. I'll let you know next week for sureAttached Files:

I fail to see the "Urgent" part of this thread. Perhaps my definition is slightly different.
-
I love my M1330.. I wasn't sure about going down to 13.3" after using a 15" either... but I'm loving it... it's the perfect wait where you can keep it on your lap for hours without feeling the heat or the weight (I have the 9 cell which lifts it above my knees, which helps for the heat)... -
gosh, the 1530 is a nice machine...drools...
-
if you want mobility and for work and multimedia AND battery life, M1330<especially theres a big sale starting on $789>, if you want all that except battery life to trade off for better graphic for casual gaming then M1530. but like they say, better screen options are avaible Q1 2008. if you can wait you get better option, if more than likely there will be coupons AFTER new years. Dell is trying to get you guys all crazy about it before X-mas.
-
if youre not gonna be traveling alot get the 1530

even though the resolution is the same as the m1330, you will still get a lot more usable space. but i would wait for the higher res screens...
8600GT is a huge plus if you need it.
not to mention the M1530 is cheaper. -
Hi guys,
Hopefully this will get answered in this thread:
1. Does the 1530 have a docking port?
2. Does anyone have any pictures comparing the LED 1330 screen to the standard one? The LED screen is not available anymore in Canada but I would like to see the difference in thickness and know if the image quality of the standard screen is good?
3. Can you order either laptop with XP? My office has not upgraded to Vista yet for a number of reasons (software we use doesn't work with Vista is the main issue...).
Thanks so much.

I had the same dilemma. I would love the extra real screen estate but the 1530 is significantly heavier. I would not want to regret my purchase (no, not an option to get another one halfway through college) as this would keep me through college for 4 years. I'm not totally sure either if I am going to be lugging it around a lot but I do plan to travel with it. Better to keep an option for it than to go for the heavier one and regret later. You can always connect it to larger external monitors and the screen on the m1330 is really good. Not sure about the m1530. Maybe you're strong and you can take the weight but couple it with some other stuff in your backpack and you'll feel it. Get whatever you're happy with and don't regret.

Fifth over here. Text speak annoys me even more than 'American English'... and that's saying something. -

You can upscale onto just about anything, as you state, but don't expect it to look as crisp.
Ctrl-Z said:Interesting. Where does Dell (or any other notebook company) state that the external digital (via HDMI) resolution of the 8600GT (or 8400) supports 1920x1200 resolution? I have seen several references to a maximum digital resolution of 1680x1050 and an analog maximum of greater than that.Click to expand...
Fourth question, fifth bullet point, and I've seen it working. -

I was also in the same boat. Trust me I know how much difference books + a laptop make. I purchased my m1530 for school. Yes, the 13" is smaller and lighter. However, I had to look at my uses. I not only want to use it for school but for light gaming as well. The better video card in the 1530 is perfect for me. I also considered how much time I spend in front of my current laptop which is a e1705. I can't imagine looking at the small print on the 1330 for the amount of time I spend on my units. The 15" will be a little easier on my eyes when I can't dock it. I figure if it gets to be too much, I'll just get one of those backpacks on wheels. Those seem to be gaining a new popularity. lol -

The point here, mr. khris, is that we help each other n discuss sumthin, not scrutinize on trivial matters n make a molehill out of a mole...! focus on how can u lend sumthin useful with that knowledge of urs, not henpecking on how is it written!! as far as u can understand , dats enuff...
we arent here 2 sharpen our vocabulary or gramatical skills..its just tech stuff..
be happy!! -

I'm in the same boat. I like everything about the m1330 -except- I want a higher resolution display than the 1280x800 I've used on my 700m for the last few years. The m1530 will provide that when they introduce the higher resolution screens. It's also nice that it's a bit cheaper. However, it would also be the largest laptop I've ever owned and I'm not sure how I'd like that.
This laptop will be for personal use and rarely traveled with - so portability isn't a huge concern. How is it working with a 15.4" laptop on your lap? Any reason to think this model would support linux any less well than a similarly equipped m1330? -
My vote to ban the tool/thug, even if unofficially!....apacheman, you want help but you are turning most of us off as its just too hard to read your ghetto street speak and frankly its annoying, surely you spend more time typing that rubbish rather than proper english?...please try and others may just be more willing to help..

I can't "text" but I'm always willing to try to learn something new
Sounds to me like you want to be able to use it in a car to watch DVDs and of course, organize/ enjoy your music & mp4 video collection, right?
Well, both should be fine for your intermediate goal(s) but considering what it will cost, it's best to look forwards a bit.
The M1530 comes with extra weight and less stamina (battery life), this is true, hence, it's not the best for frequent travellers or University students that need to use it all day long without having access to a outlet (mains).
On the other hand, the M1530 offers you extra power in terms of CPU choice (e.g. T7800 @ 2.6GHz), the 8600M GT + 256MB discrete graphics, blueray disc (should you ever want to hook it up to a HD TV & watch HD DVDs with it) and last but imho, not least, a third USB port.
What's missing from my own picture is the current chipset in use on the M1530, but I will, for the time being, assume it's Santa Rosa just like the M1330. The reason I mention this is that I would certainly want to buy a Notebook that is compatible with the upcoming 45nm Core 2 Duos! These will be more powerful than the current lot and/or less power-hungry compared to the current 65nm CPUs.
Anyways, back to your own needs: it's an expensive investment (even if it's your Dad footing the bill...) so try to "forsee" your needs 2-3 years from now too... .

Is it worth the wait? Yes, it is! No, it's not! Useless answer, I know, but all too true, when you consider Moore's law and that for the time being, all things PC will be smaller & faster and more energy efficient every 18mths or less. Thus, we all have to take the plunge sometime and the moment you have the notebook in your hands, it will be already on it's way to being obsolete - or, at the very least, outdated tech...
