I just received my new Dell Studio XPS 13 with the integrated NVidia 9400G graphics and came across a somewhat annoying problem. When I put my computer to sleep and shut the lid, then as soon as the lid opens, the computer wakes up from standby. I dont want it to do this and would rather press the button manually.

Anyone have ideas how to disable this feature? The power settings only mention the action when closing the lid (which mine is set to nothing), but there are no settings anywhere for lid open action.

You can't change it. You can tell it to do something other than sleep when you close the lid, but opening the lid will always bring it out. Basically just because there are few reasons why you'd need to open the lid but didn't plan on using the laptop right away.

Yeah there is no way...Why would you want to open the lid anyway? I can't really think of a reason ^^

I guess I am just too used to my old Inspiron 6400 not doing anything when the lid opens. Ive also tried the following command line:

    powercfg -devicedisablewake "ACPI Lid"

It says I do not have permission, even thought I am running the command program as administrator.

+1, I can't think of any other reason why you'd want to open the lid either.

Hmm, I guess I must be the only one that doesnt like this feature. I find it annoying, but I can live with it. I would still prefer this feature to be disabled if possible though.

Hi, has anyone figured this out yet? My Thinkpad SL500 is annoying the hell out of me with this... due to the lack of a latch it turns on in the bag sometimes, because the lid opens a tiny bit.

    powercfg /devicedisable "ACPI Lid"

doesn't work here either - gives me an invalid parameters error message, even though the syntax is correct and the device "ACPI Lid" shows up in the list of devices able to wake from S3...

Same here... (with Studio XPS 13).. I think this is the stupidest feature of all time - I travel a lot and my laptop spends a lot of time in the case in the trunk of my car, however when it's in sleep mode if I go over a speed bump, pot hole, etc, even in the case, the computer is rattled enough that it turns itself on and stays on until the battery dies. Then when I go to use my computer the battery is dead, and it being on for hours zipped up in the case it gets so hot you literally can't even touch it, and I've sometimes noticed a bit of a burning smell....which can't be good. I guess I could just do a full shutdown each time, but it's annoying to have to boot up as opposed to jsut come out of sleep....

The power options have "Lid closed action".....why not "lid opened action" too!!!

None of my old Dells or Compaq did this.......... grrrr!!!

Don't open it until you are ready to use it. If you don't want to it turn on automatically, then shut down the computer, especially if you don't plan on using it for hours.

I think that's the only decently valid point I see here, though I don't understand how a bump could possibly open your lid enough to turn it on.

Anyhow, assuming that's the case, you may want to invest in a laptop sleeve (with a tight fit) which should keep the lid shut and protect your laptop further while you're at it.

    OR

You could choose to hibernate the computer instead, which if I recall, doesn't wake the computer upon opening the lid.

my xps13 comes out of sleep on it's own while sitting on the table and the cover closed. I've put it to sleep, then a few hours later I see the hinge with a steady white light instead of the usual blinking light and a glow coming from the space between the palmrest and the screen. Unless I have a ghost in the house, nothing touches the laptop or table.

I'm running Windows 7, so I'll try the hibernation instead.
