    Hi Guys,
I had an unused copy of Vista x64 Ultimate so i used it to do a fresh install on my M1530. Instead of using the key from the cd i used the key on the bottom of my laptop. I now have Vista Home Premium x64 installed and activated ok as oppose to Ultimate, is that correct even though i used the Ultimate disc?

Also is what i have legal/allowed? If not i would like to re-install using the Ultimate key or just stick to Home Premium 32 bit.

    Thanks

Yes, that is correct because the key determines what you get. Thought you were going to get something you didn't pay for :D?

Your serial key determines what OS is going to be installed on the computer. From what I read, all Vista DVDs come with all OS on there it is just what CD KEY you use determines which OS gets installed. So if you used a home premium cdkey on a ultimate cd, you will get home premium installed not ultimate.

If you want to install Ultimate you need to use the Ultimate key.

The disc has all versions of Vista on it.

I think you are mistaken because this cannot be done. According to many online, the CDKEY is specific to which OS will be installed. Even if you used an Ultimate 64 installation DVD, Vista Home Premium 32 will be installed on the computer because that is the CDKEY you used. All versions of Windows Vista are on every single installation DVD regardless of what it says.

I bought Vista 64 Update Anytime CD for $5 from CompUSA. That was a year ago. There is a link on this forum showing how to do it. I think it was posted in IBM section.

    Sigh...I'll say it again.

You had a 32bit Home Premium key. You can install either 32bit HP or 64bit HP with that key.

Sure, you used a 64bit Vista Ultimate disk...but it installed HP, using a U-disk.

If you do indeed have a Ultimate copy with a HP disk, I'd like to know what warez you used to force that to install.

Anyway, the $5 upgrade CD is just a CD...not a whole new key.

You need to purchase a new key if you are want to change which version of OS you have. Changing your 'bitness' doesn't require a new purchase.

Dell at ONE point offered 64bit Vista versions to anyone who ordered, but didn't have a 64bit HP key available...so instead of getting hit with mis-advertisement, they gave 64bit Ultimate keys to them and then shut down that offering program. That is the only way I am aware of that a 32bit HP user would get a 64bit Ultimate install. And it is no longer an option.

You might want to read the link I posted. The first shipment of M1330 was only available with Home Premium 32. I got Pearlescent White which was discontinued after a few months of M1330 release.

I read the link and I think that method would actually work. Because you are not using the serial key to install but rather you are transferring the activation of a current OS to another one. Does the Windows Update feature still work normal for you?

My M1530 has Ultimate 32 from Dell and I re-installed Ultimate 64. My M1330 works the same as my M1530 running Ultimate 64. I get all Windows Utlimate Extras upgrades from Microsoft.

If you ask Microsoft it's probably illegal but then I installed Ultimate by mistake and the original CD KEY which is legal works with the installation. I guess I am ignorance and don't know which version is which.

    oh well..

i just downloaded 64bit somewhere (hmm)... used the home premium CDKey under my laptop and installed x64 home premium.... (didnt enter cdkey during setup)

then after installing everything, went to control panel and input my key.... was activated over the internet without any trouble...
