I wanted to try out Vista 64 bit since everyoen says it has better performance and all that. So I installed Vista 64, installed all the drivers, did the tweaks I did with my 32 bit, and started up takes about 20 seconds longer, which is a long time since on 32 bit, after I typed my password in, my desktop would only take 1 second to load.

But on 64 bit, there would be the screen thay says "Welcome" for like 10 seconds.

So the loading time is 10x longer.

    ???

Be patient. It'll take some time for superfetch and prefetch to make a difference.

    What's superfetch and prefetch?

Also, is there a noticable performance increase when you use x64 without 4GB+ RAM?

What is this suppose to mean?

@Ram, I have 4GB of ram and the only thing I noticed is that starting up takes 10x longer (10 seconds longer).

Like I said, the only thing I've noticed that is different is the start up time of my laptop.

I've been doing google seraches and have read articles that state that Vista 64 bit gives about a 10% performance increase. There was this one article that said that and also his boot up time on Vista 64 was slower.

Mine seemED slower too. I think its because the cache in your CPU. Apparently it builds up data every load which means it can load quicker however when you do it for the first times its slower as the cache has less temporary memory?

That might all be absurd but hey!

If you have 4GB installed with 32 bit and move to 64 bit, you will see a slowdown because windows will load stuff in that extra ~300-700mb of memory it can now access. Consequently, it also enlarges your pagefile by 450-1050mb and tries to write to it. If you have 2GB of ram, change your pagefile to 200-300 on the low end and set the ability to expand to 1.5-2 GB. Your pagefile will reset every boot back to the low end and it will prevent certain bugs from popping up with the high end limit. Having the initial page file set to a small amount keeps windows from writing much to it on the boot.

Next, make sure you have all your drivers installed and as others mentioned, that prefetch and superfetch enabled. Lastly, make sure you have all the current windows updates as many are out there that fix system slowing bugs for specific configurations. Hope this helps.

Or it could be struggling to load the Ricoh SD card drivers. 64 bit windows is known to hang on start if incompatible devices/drivers are present. Try removing the Ricoh drivers and/or reinstalling the 64 bit drivers from Ricoh's site. It could also be anpther device like bluetooth. Try disabling devices one by one to see which is causing the slow boot.

64 bit programs such as maya2008 (64bitversion) or autocad 2009 (likewise) would perform much faster though, correct?

i'm currently running a windows xp pro 32 on my new machine (see sig) i tend to be getting many OOM errors, would an upgrade to vista64 fix this? even with the same amount of memory (4gb)? perhaps the programs programmed for 64bit OS's would utilize the ram better?
