I currently have an M1530 with the specs listed in my signature. My question being, would it be faster to have x64 bit Vista on my computer over the x32 I have right now for everyday applications and stability? I web browse, do some audio editing, listen to music, manage cameras and other devices, and download and watch TV shows etc. Would I notice a speed improvement over x32 besides the obvious "fresh install" feeling? I also should mention that I do some moderate gaming on the computer, CS:Source and BF2 mainly.

if u dont have time, dont bother with the hassles of reinstalling an OS...

x64 wont give you that much improvement over normal web browsing... gaming might give you a little advantage, but i'd say not worth the trouble

Now reinstall to windows server 2008!
When i first got my laptop I was using vista 32 bit, then changed to 64 bit,
    recently switched to Server 2008.

Boot Times: Including BIOS till last HDD/CPU activity (useable desktop)
    32 bit: 48-53 Seconds
    64 bit: 44-50 Seconds
    Server: 41-44 Seconds

    Compression 1GB archive (100 files) with 7zip 64bit vs 32bit (mp3 folder):
    64bit: 3:59
    32bit: 5:04

Other: I had only home premium for vista, so the remote desktop/bitlocker etc features that come with even standard server are nice. Also home premium does not have gpedit.msc which was a pain.

As far as application compatibility, 32bit (or server 32 bit which i havnt tried) will give you the best. Most drivers available as well.

Also RMCLOCK seems broken in 64bit, cant select C3/C4 states in advanced.
Video Card seems to run hotter (but that may be due to using 64 bit compatible drivers which, since the 32bit OEM driver was not available for 64 bit)

I have been running x64 ultimate and would not go back to x32. I like the fact that my 6 gb of ram is used and my 1 gb of turbo cache memory is used and when dell updates the bios for the 1530, my 8 gb will be used. I to date have not had one bsod, or one program not work properly. Every device in my computer has x64 bit drivers. The only software i had to purchase was for the fingerprint reader to work. The software from upek is far superior to Dells.

U only have 3GB of ram so ... If you upgrade to 64 bit vista, it gonna run even slower since all software with 64 bit use more ram than 32 bit software. So I don't recommend you to upgrade your windows until you get 4 or more GB of ram ;)

^^^^and if you go to the M1330's 64bit install page (do a simple search right here)

It will give you a link to download the Upek software for free

which i HIGHLY agree is A BILLION times better than the one dell gave you.

and dude yes 64bit rox big time..will you notice HUGE gains?? probably not....will it take a long time? No.. if your slow like me and watch a movie while u do it and ignore the computer---2 hours..

    lol

But you'll like it the 64 bit stuff will work a lot faster and the other programs install all normal and work perfect...

So if you get a chance do it. Plus you'll probably update the ram in a year or so :)

Cool, x64 isn't bad. It's nice and quick and efficient. Of course........my DVD drive crapped the bed and needs to be replaced, story of my life :( I will be adding more RAM very soon I believe.
