Hey all, about to purchase my 1st laptop due to my desktop no longer being ideal for me.
Currently im looking at a laptop capable enough to run maya 3d, purely for heavy animation and light modelling tasks. Wont be using it for much gaming but some sessions of source games and starcraft2 whenever it appears are probaly all.
And above all it has to be able to stand being lugged about every odd day, so being light and rugged is where its at.
Now, ive kind of narrowed it down to the Vostro 1510 or xps 1530, I like both, more so the vostro as i dont want an overly eye catching laptop while im on the train to be honest.Quietness and cool running are also much obliged![]()
But so far user reviews of the new vostro are proving hard to find.
Im Willing to spend about £700 for a beast thatl last me, im going with Dell because I may be able to get it through a work scheme and some kind of discount (i work in a game studio).
But if anyone can point out a more ideal solution (smaller if poss) il be all ears, but im definately leaning towards the vostro just need more user opinions of it.

I would go for the xps simply because it has the better graphics card. It will aid you in 3d applications and games alike. The downside of the xps will be felt on your wallet.
I do like the looks of the new vostro lineup though, even more the the xps laptops. always liked sharp lines and greys. -
I'd get the xps1530, I purchased one with the following specs:
T9300 2.50ghz c2d
3gig of ram
8600gt 256 GDDR3
250gig drive
1400x900 screen
price: 774GPB inc VAT and delivery. What I did was order it through the small business site which was cheaper, at the time, than the home site. -
The XPS 1530 is the better option in everything but price.

Cheers so far lads, how well does the 1530 fair with being lugged about in a backpack alot?
It definately seems the 1530 is the better option but i definately like the looks of the vostro plus i hear it fairs better with being lugged about?
Zet, thats a good price mate, is that with the 15% off coupon? its my ideal build just perhaps a 2.4 cpu.
Another question im wondering is how much the battery life is affected by the 8600gt vs the 8400? -
No idea on the battery life front, wouldn't expect it to make too much difference. -
Hey, I know you said you want Dell, and the XPS 1530 is nice, but why not take a look at the Thinkpad T61P? It's got discrete graphics that meet your needs, have nice batteries available, and aren't flashy at all.

Man, dont even think about buying a vostro, they are the most cheapest models in dell, and as they are a new model they have a lot of bugs and all that stuff, xps is been out on the market for so long and they are pretty good and they are really reliable.
-
Yeah Tia, most things are blatently overpriced here in the UK, soon oxygen will be sold ^^.
Definately thinking of going with the xps now, besides if it doesnt live upto the abuse (shouldnt be much, but still) i can always return it within the 30 days?
Thinking much more along the lines of Zets model the t9300 line of cpus should run cooler right#? -
paper_wastage Beat this 7x7x7 Cube
there might be restocking fees in UK, check to make sure
besides, dell xps customer support is great...
T9300 = santa rosa penyrn = a little cooler than the previous line -
XPS M1530 if your doing 3D stuff. If they offered a 8600M GT in the Vostro 1510 then possibly I'd recommend that model.

Check my review out. It might answer your question

The 1510's however are not as good a machine as the 1500's were, the graphics card is worse and the displays aren't as good either.
Vostro1510 vs xps m1530?
