Well i also got an Alienware M15x i think i already commented on here and said, but i have my specs now :) In my case i didnt say anything other then i want a Different Model besides the M1530 because they sent me a M1530 as a replacement for my previous M1530. So they gave me the Alienware :) The specs are in my sig, and they gave me a Bluray Rom / DVD-R

Dell has said to me that there was low or no stock of 164x at the depot- One manager said it was end of life which i find hard to believe

I think that for people with issues the AW may be more stable and less likey to have multiple replacements-

Time will tell- I see there are people reporting order numbers for 1647, and 1645s but no 1640s -

The cooling system in the Alienware's are way better, The video card / GPU have dedicated fans, and the Videocard is replaceable on the M15x/M17x :) Not to mention all around the laptops are more solid and well built

Regarding to your signature, How many replacements have you gone through for a Dell system. 3 times? starting with 1530 Model? and every new replacement, you got a better spec? That's awesome. :D

Lol... Awesome isn't the word I would use. It's been so frustrating, currently I am kinda obsessing over the fact the downgraded me to an i5 540m from an i7 720qm. I get the better clock speed and battery life thing, but as a big video enconder... Lol, gotta rember i'm way ahead of that 1530m that was warranty 1st swapped back in mid January.
Oh and the rgb led was amazing!!! I will miss that too.

I wonder if you could switch or have the lcds switched? - Tell Dell you want your RGB and have a tech dispatched out to swap.

The m15x doesn't come with the option of an RBB LED. Only a 15.6 1600x900 display and a 15.6 1920x1080 display.

The more and more I think about this, the less and less, I think I want to alienware.

Is the Processor on the alienware replaceable like on the S XPS? If so I may swap the i7 from my S XPS into the Alienware before I sent it back :).

Also all the bench marks I have seen, the Ati HD 4670 seems to on a whole outperform the Nvidia GTX 260m. Wierd huh. So Alienware is basically a bigger slower version of the S XPS.

Just saw the processor is replaceable. I definately think i am going to swap them before I send it back =)

Maybe I should say, I will insist that Dell tech support dispatches a tech to do it, that way they can't claim i tried to pull a fast one.

I have not experienced any throttling yet either, but then again, the Alienware M15x comes with a 150w adapter. The AlienFX lighting is alot of fun too. Did you recently start a Warranty Exchange?

Sure did, on Tuesday. And I inquired about the specs a few days after, well at least what model they would be sending me as I warned them not to ship me another XPS, and they were going to have an agent call me in the next 24-48... Its been about 45 hours now.....

Probably will have to call them back again and see if I can't get some verification of some sort on the exchange.....

If you pull up your Service call status, you can see what they are giving you, as well as your specs when its available. You can access it in your Dell Account. it took them about 1.5 weeks to get my system too me, so definitely alot faster then they projected. What kind of system do you have that they are replacing?

Your going to hit "Service Call Status" choose "Service Call status" and enter your Systems Service tag. Choose your service call number, and book mark it if you wana refresh it many times throughout the day like i did lol. Eventually things will start to show up on that page regarding your replacement. I got my specs about 2-3 days before i received it.

    Had an XPS M1730 with 8800gtx in SLI, 4gb 667 ram, 250gb 7200rpm, t9300, blu-ray player, 1920X1200 LCD.

The video cards decided to meltdown overnight, and since they're discontinued/out of stock parts, Dell made me run a few diagnostics, determined I was right, and offered an AW M17X. Had to fight a bit for specs, and here's what I'm eventually getting (been waiting 2 weeks, the specs are all visible in an order though but apparently 3-6 weeks for an M17X is about standard)

    1 224-8241 M17x10 - Black Metallic $0.00
    1 313-8569 Slot-Loading Blu-ray Reader $250.00
    1 317-3657 Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz-2.8 GHz TM $1740.00
    1 317-3660 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz,ANWNB $0.00
    1 320-8856 17, WUXGA 1920 x 1200 RGB LED,1200p,ANB $300.00
    1 320-8858 Dual 1G ATI Radeon CrossfireX,ANB $300.00
    1 342-0666 250GB 7,200RPM SATA-II HDD,ANWNB $0.00
    1 421-1399 WIN 7 PRO,64, ENG,AW NB $139.00
    1 430-3739 Intel Ultimate N WiFi Link 6300 a/g/n $50.00

Definitely a nice refresh. Mind you I was still 100% satisfied with the M1730, until the meltdown. Plus they're letting me extend the warranty on this new machine, meaning that with any luck, this can turn into a 2 year computer rental contract :)

Good News :) My brother who works in IT (actually i work in it also, but as a Sun Solaris Administrator), he is a windows server administrator, was our for easter and spent about 3 hours last night with my laptop and it would seem he got everything work properly. Dells factory load was causing my bluetooth issues. He re-installed everything from scratch.

Since everything is working properly, I think i am going to call dell and cancel my m15x Alienware warranty replacement. I would rather keep my i7 and the 16" RGBLED. What do you guys think?

I myself would want the AW, but to each his own... I am a younger guy who won't be using it for anything business like.....

I feel that if I were older I would stick with the XPS....

I would say that the GPU and the screen (the RGB which I love as well!) are the main differences. On the AW you get a much better GPU, 260m GTX, that will last you a longer time in the gaming world. But on your XPS 16, you get the beautiful Full HD RGBLED (you're getting 1600x900 on the AW). In present times, the processors are arguably evenly matched despite the difference in the number of cores. Apart from the weight, AW being heavier, those are the major differences. It's a tough choice, and I can't really decide for you. Personally I would go with the m15x, as I've always wanted one and I'm a gamer, but that's just me. Ain't it wonderful to have options? Lol :). Good luck!

I will add that I do like my 1645 a lot!

The Dell tech came to my house and said that he couldn't fix the issue and would be sending in a request for a new system. That was last Tuesday. How do you call and request a different system? I am not happy with my XPS 13, and think that it will just continue to fail. Do you call "Order support" or "tech support"? Thanks in advance.

I know people generally say the gtx 260 is a wY better gpu, but when I looked at bench marks it actually seemed they were neck And neck, with the Ari 4670 edging it out most the time.... Is the nvidia that much better ?

The 260m GTX is definitely the better card. I believe the cards come from the same generation (the last one) in which the 260 was probably a performance class ahead of the 4670. Don't get me wrong, the 4670 is still a pretty decent card, despite what some people might say, and can play decent-high settings on a majority games out today. However where the 4670 might struggle on high settings, the 260 most likely would not. If you look at NotebookCheck, you see the 4670 is #43 and the 260 is #20 (though you still have to take that list with a grain of salt ). There is a difference in performance with the 260m taking the cake :), meaning the 4670 will start to look "older" a little sooner than the 260 when more demanding games release.

Huh. The ironic thing is that I recently got an XPS16 as a replacement for my E1505.

Beyond the occasional screen flickering (which is not terribly annoying), it insanely fast.
