I just picked up a new HP Envy 27" 4K monitor on sale. I've noticed that whenever i have it plugged into my WD15 Dock to my XPS 9550, the max resolution available is 2560x1440, there's no 4K resolution available from the Intel HD graphics properties page.

I've tried connecting to the dock both using the HDMI and Mini Display port. According to the manual, the dock is capable of 4K resolution at 30Hz and since I won't be playing games on this monitor - that will do just fine but I'm at a loss for why I can't get access to the higher resolution.

    Any ideas/suggestions?

    Thanks

Do you get 4K@30 via the built-in HDMI?

I can't get 4k at all, no matter what I try. I've tried connecting Display Port to WD15 Dock and then USB-C to laptop, still no go. For whatever reason, the 4k resolution is never available. I've also tried connecting HDMI directly from monitor to XPS 9550 but that doesn't provide any 4k resolutions either. I'm at a complete loss here as to why I cannot get 4k resolutions.

I would clean out the drivers with DDU and try an intel one not Dell branded?

Just tried this... Still same issue. Showing me that the optimal resolution is 2560x1600 for this 4k external monitor. In the Intel HD Graphics Properties, what should one be choosing "Maintain Display Scaling" or "Maintain Aspect Ratio" etc. I've also noticed that only when I choose CLONE display does the 4k resolution come up, presumably because my laptop's panel is 4k but even though it shows it as being a 4k resolution, the info details on my monitor show it's not showing a 4k resolution. This is extremely frustrating to say the least.

Probably the monitor isn't in the "list"
Can you add a custom resolution?

Isn't it what list? When I try to add a custom resolution it says : "The custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity"

Contact Dell, explain the situation and they should fix it around 2024. :(

    4K@60Hz supposedly requires 6.18 Gbit/s of bandwidth.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort

The ordinary WD15 cable (USB Type-C cable or Universal cable with nonThunderbolt system):
Up to 10.8 G of DisplayPort bandwidth (x2 DP lanes)
(the other cable 21.6 G, x4 DP lanes, maybe that's the TB15/16 cable?)

Have you got anything else connected to the WD15?

Only other thing I have connected to WD15 is ethernet at the moment. No other USB or video connections. If I can't get this WD15 to work in true 4k resolution, I have to get rid of it - just worried about buying another accessory that will lead to the same result.

Will the TB16 dock ensure this issue is resolved? If I have to bite the bullet I will, just need something as a permanent fix and will try to sell the WD15 on Kijiji or something.
