I receive mine tomorrow, and the NIC isn't even mentioned on the desciption of the XPS 1530 here in Norway. I hope it comes with one

Gigabit ethernet is a big plus for me, since I tranfer databases and VMWare machines between computers, and thoses files can quickly become 10-20+++ Gb big.

Since I have gigabit on my 5 years old latitude, I didn't even think a brand new XPS could come with someting else! I'll post tomorrow what it comes with. Fingers crossed...

Exactly what I was thinking. A "performance" notebook in 2008 without gigabit Ethernet???

I've just been reading up on Intels upcoming 'Centrino 2' platform, and alongside the Montevina chipset, improved onboard graphics and Wi-Max, GigE is listed as a neccessary component of the certification.

So for Dell to put 'Centrino 2' stickers onto their products they will have to support and provide gigabit ethernet across the lines. Wi-Max too.

    Good news.

I think the point of the move is that Intel want it to be, it shows potential and with that level of saturation it will have potential.

By integrating it as a core part of every new 'Centrino 2' certified product they can obtain market penetration and facilitate product/standard awareness... fast.

if you need to copy big files use a portable hdd; yes the 10/100 is somewhat useless and not very futureproof but by no means a deal breaker. i run the draft-n for my wifi and yes its quicker than using the NIC, hence why it doesnt get used anymore.

I just got my 1530. Overall I'm very happy with it. But I was disappointed to find out that it doesn't have gigabit ethernet, particularly because my home network (with a NAS) is gigabit.

I know it's my fault for not checking this beforehand. Like many others, I simply assumed that a high performance laptop would have it.

Looks like I'll go the ExpressCard route.

Does anyone know if there are any ExpressCards which have two separate gigabit lan ports? Thanks.
