I have a SPX 15z and never use optical drive. Now, I want to add a second hard drive or SSD to my laptop using laptop's optical drive bay. A friend of mine told that I have to buy a hard drive caddy. So, what is it? and where can I buy it?
Thank you so much for your help.

Lots of generics on eBay for fairly cheap. Can get a more expensive one (read: overpriced) from newmodeus, which probably has a nicer bezel, though.

    Hi elpee_2001,
    Welcome to the community.
I would like to inform you that XPS 15z laptop only has option for one hard drive slot so you cannot add any extra internal hard drive.
Also the optical drive inside the laptop is a slot load drive which cannot be replaced with any internal hard drive even if you buy a hard drive cage.
Alternate solution would be to buy external hard drive & connect to the laptop for back up.
    Hope this helps.

If you are talking about the L502x this one worked for me.

    I don't know about the 15z though.

Thank you. I'm glad to join this community. People here are so kind and helpful.
About your answer, found this by Google search. Some successfully used hard drive caddy to install 2nd hard drive. However, the caddy is too expensive to me, and as Commander Wolf suggested, I bought one from eBay at $11.99. I'll post the result here when I receive it.

@ Sgraffite: I saw your post too late, I've placed an order already.
Eva (from ny-compu-tek you gave me) told it works for 15z too.

    Hi,

I read the forum in Dell community where a different customer tried to do the same thing. But he mentioned that he could not replace optical drive with the hard drive & has installed the optical drive back.

My suggestion, you can buy a bigger size hard drive & replace it with the current internal hard drive.

    Regards,
    Dell-Rakesh R

    Thank you for suggestion.
In fact, I replaced the 'factory built-in' internal hard drive (1TB) by a Crucial M4 256GB SSD where the OS sitting on.
I never use CD/ DVD, and I need more space to keep my digital stuff. If so, why don't I replace the optical drive by an interal hard drive I have now?
I believe many of us here have the same my idea, and they have done the job.

Yes, the idea of having a second hard drive in lieu of the optical drive is fairly popular, and caddy adapters are commercially available for various popular notebook models.

Consider this adapter. It's relatively expensive, and perhaps the only one. I'm unable to find an XPS 15 z caddy adapter as inexpensive as the ones I have bought for my ThinkPad and Latitude notebooks (for example, this).

Hi elpee_2001! I am looking to do the same but found the ones design for XPS 15z are expensive as well. Would you mind providing the link to the one you purchased?
