    Would I be okay using the highest battery power settings while watching a DVD? That would turn off the graphics card but I wasn't sure if DVD playing really needed it. I have an XPS 13.

    You can use the "highest" (and by that you mean most conservative, right?) power settings and playback a DVD. DVD playback doesn't require much GPU power at all.
