I'm looking for a well padded backpack that can house and protect dell 17" ers.
    Any recommendations ?

Another option I'm considering is getting a padded laptop sleeve, puuting the laptop in it, and putting the entire combo in a big backpack. Any recommendations here for the padded sleeve and big backpack ?

The M1730 should be thinner than a D901C right? So it should be able to fit in the notebook sleeve of a Swissgear Pegasus or Ibex (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please). If it's as thick or thicker, then it won't actually fit. I've got a Targus TCB001EU that can definitely fit a D901C, but has no room for a cooler though. It is well padded, but I think is only available here in the EU.

The dimensions for the M1730 are:
    Width: 16.0" (406 mm)
    Height: <2.00" (50.7 mm)
    Depth: 11.9" (302.6 mm)

I'm also interested in a backpack etc for the M6400:
    Width: 15.4"/393mm
    Depth: 11.0"/280.5mm
    Height: 1.5"/38.5mm

Look at a Swiss Gear. I have one for my 1530 and it is a great backpack, plenty of room and very well padded.

I have an Alienware Odyssey and it's pretty solid quality. Made by Mobile Edge.

    :confused2:

The Targus TXL617 has a good size, but its flimsy.

The Ibex Swiss gear is well made but 1) It seems a tad bit small (I prefer sufficient clearance so that zippers etc dont hit the laptop) 2) the padding could go up higher and 3) does not seem to have a hip belt or chest strap.

The high sierra randolph is nice, but I cant figure out if the removable padded sleeve takes 17" laptops. I'm guessing it does not judging from the outer dimensions.

Screw it, I'll just put my laptop in a towel and use one of my bigger non-laptop bags :mad2:

Cant believe there is no XL, well proetcting, well made and comfortable laptop backpack. Maybe I should start my own backpack company ...

Yeah...I think with the 17" ones it's hard to find that one that will work for *you*. LoL..make sure they are heavy duty towels, they come in XL sizes.

So, each one is nice..just doesnt have everything you need. :(

If, you start your own company...let me know and I will purchase a new bag from you! ;) :D

I'm getting really tempted to order the high sierra randolf ... if it does not fit, I can always send it back at ebags expense...

I just bought the XPS backpack from Dell when I bought my M1730. It's got plenty of room, and it's nice and padded.
