Pretty self-explanatory, I want to know which warranty would be the best to buy with this laptop. These warranties can get pricey, but I guess in theory a 3 year warranty with accidental protection plan would basically mean that I could do anything to the laptop over 3 years, right? It stops working, I'll drop it in a pool and I get a new one? :p

So my question is, what's the best value with these warranties? I know I should probably be protected, but should I assume that after 1 year I'd be in the clear anyway? Also, I think the 1645 doesn't come with 2 year warranties (for some reason) so those would be out of the question.

Personally I'd say go for the 3yr in home. I got the 2 yr in home because I'm very careful around my electronics and I know that I'm NOT gonna 'accidentally' spill anything on it. Once you start talkin 'accidental' price goes way up. Is it really worth it? As long as you have an active warranty you can always add to it later on or extend your current one, like on the last day it expires :D

Could you buy a warranty and if you accidentally spill something on it, get the accidental portection and get it replaced? (Cheating, I know)

As long as you have an active warranty I don't see why not lol. IF you log into your Dell account then you can view your current warranty and options are available to add services to it or extend it but remember your gonna pay for it ):

I went through this dilemma when I purchased mine. As for me, I work at a photo studio and I am also a student. I need the laptop for both my job and my classes so I went with the 2 year advanced warranty (it only added 79$ to the price for my build). My laptop gets a lot of travel, especially around campus and on our tightly packed shuttles. Another poster, Cin, I believe dropped their laptop and had it replaced. My old laptop, a couple weeks ago, my girlfriend and I were at a coffee shop, and she knocked over her cup right by my laptop, luckily the lid on the cup stayed on and nothing really got on the laptop. But hey, its just some insight on what I purchased and why. On my old laptop, I didn't buy accidental coverage, and for 3 years, I never had an accident.

One question for the US and maybe Canada folks - is the "Premium" service worth it? It says telephone access to North American technicians. Does this provide better support?

You mean the "My Tech Team" support? For some reason I have over a thousand days of it, and I'd say it's meh. It's nice to have, and it seems the techs have a more relaxed script to read from (I should call them "guidelines" instead, actually,) but for the $49 a month they want for it I'd say not really. You can get just as much accomplished with regular XPS support as you can with it.

You can only purchase the accidental warranty at point of sale or within the return period (21 days)

Yeah I'm pretty positive you can't add accidental coverage later (after accident). You can only add additional years to your warranty when you have an active warranty. Accidental is worth it in my opinion because it basically means: no matter what, I can keep this laptop working for ____ years.

Well I'll be using it mainly for university over the next 3 years. Since I'll probably replace it in 3-4 years, should I buy the 3 year+accidental and make SURE that it'll be 100% for as long as I need it? Or should I get a 1 year accidental now and upgrade it at the end of the year if I feel I need it?

When I bought my SXPS 16 it included a 2 year basic warranty. I added an extra year when I bought it for $100. After receiving the laptop I added accidental damage for 3 years for $96. Definitely worth it in my case, even though I treat my electronics very well, you never know when something could happen to it.
