In Feb. I purchased an XPS M1330 with 2GB of ram and Vista Home Premium. I've since upgraded the ram to 4GB and would like to install the 64bit version of VHP. Is there any chance that Dell would just send it to me if I called? Has anyone been successful in getting the 64bit version of Vista Home Premium?

Its worth a shot.

There is a long thread with the title "DELL sending Vista 64-bit....". There are instructions in that thread that you can follow. I received mine in 2 days after sending a PM...
-
I have never heard of anyone getting turned down. It is policy that if you purchased a laptop with Vista home premium you are entitled to a the 64 bit version as well. Pm DELL-Chris M on the dell forums with your Service Tag and address. I recieved mine 2 days after PMing him.
-
Actually, they changed the policy and turned everyone down for a few months. I, along with plenty others who complained, got Dell to change their minds.
You should be able to get it very quickly. -
I just hit up the XPS chat support one day and they sent it without any problems. They now actually offer the 64 bit on their site.
-
Follow the instructions provided here and you should easily get your 64-bit disc.
-
cheers! -
Wow Thanks! It took all of 5 minutes by chat. I should get it in 1-2 business days.
-
Cool. The next step is for Dell to actually start offering 64-bit drivers thru their official support pages.

I sent an email to Dell-Chris M about getting one sent to the UK, he said I had to contact the Dell UK tech support, mentioning a certain policy change, and they'd fix it for me.
It's been a week and I haven't heard from Dell UK since my request. I just now emailed Chris again to see why this could possibly be. -
Man, no complaints here. I asked for the 64bit version of Vista Home Premium by chat on Sunday afternoon and just received it. You can't get better service than that!
-
same here, pmed chris on sunday got it at 11 am this morning!
-
I actually just chatted with tech support after seeing this post and I was on the chat for about 15 min due to the numerous preliminary questions and was told they would send it to me with no problem at all but they said that they would not be able to support it if I install it and they wanted to send a tech to install it but I said I would do it myself when I decide to install it. overall it was pretty quick and painless.

maybe a dumb question, but what is the benefit of 64-bit xp?
-
I know that it 64-bit Vista can support >3GB of RAM. Supposedly faster too but, I'm still unsure if I would want to upgrade to 64-bit Vista as some of my programs may not run correctly or at all.. but might as well grab that 64-bit Vista, it's free for those of us that have systems that came with Vista 32-bit.
As for the driver issue, BestBuy's M1530's comes with 64-bit Vista, so the drivers do exist. They're just not up on Dell's support pages. Hopefully, they will put them up soon for those of us that wants to upgrade to 64-bit. -
Will this work if I buy from the outlet?
Does the 64 bit require dedicated graphics? -
I don't see why it wouldn't. You're still buying a Vista Home Premium license with a refurbished system. Yes, Vista 64-bit works with built-in graphics or dedicated.
I just got a XPS One from the Dell Outlet store for cheap (30% off) = $525 before shipping + tax ($608 after). It comes with Windows Vista Premium 32-bit and has Intel's integrated GMA X3100. Not the greatest GPU but it won't be my gaming system anyways.
I already have a Vista Home Premium 64-bit disc from my M1530, but I'm gonna try and request another disc for the XPS One. -
Ya I don't game, and I don't want the problems with the 8400gs. I was hoping it would be ok w/o dedicated. Thanks
-
I should just resubmit my question.
What are the chances Dell will give me a free 64bit Vista disc?
