What are the main differences from the Dell SXPS 1640 to 1645 to 1647?

I currently own a 1640 which is still awesome but would like to get a better processor so potentially look at the 1645 or 1647 and find one from the outlet or ebay.

Can someone shed some light on the current problems, or differences on these models? Which I7 chip to go for?

    Here's the break down:
1640: Core 2 Duo processor, ATI 3670 GPU
1645: Core i7 quad core processor, ATI 4670/5730 GPU
    1647: Core i5/i7 dual-core processor, same GPU as 1645

The SXPS 16 all had the same "problems", to varying degrees: overheating that caused throttling, and in some extreme cases the commputer would shut down to prevent physical damage.

In your signature you say you already have a XPS 15 L502x. If that is the case, why do you want to replace yout 1640 with a 1647/1645? Your XPS 15 is basically an upgrade to the SXPS 16... Better screen, better speakers (all else being equal).
