What brand SSD does Dell XPS Laptops Come With?

I see they have the 256gb ssd, 512gb or 1tb configuration for their dell xps laptops and has been for a while. But what brand is their ssd? Because from what i recall, don't they use a lesser name brand? If that is the case, people don't replace the dell xps ssd with say a samsung evo pro ssd etc?


Because when i see when you want to upgrade the ssd for 100 dollars more from say 512gb to 1tb... well aren't they giving you like a sandisk ssd... which is not as good as a samsung pro ssd? So its like okay you buy the most updated system on the xps... say 16gb ram or even 32gb ram and upgrade to 1tb ssd. But the ssd would be sandisk?

 

Dell uses a variety of SSDs in their laptops, typically Hynix and Samsung, but that doesn't rule out others. It's typically a better deal if you want to upgrade the SSD yourself, but you won't notice a difference between any of the brands unless you are benching or doing a very non-standard workload.

 

@custom90gt True, there is no standard. For example, on my previous Alienware Area-51m R1 I had a 512GB SK Hynix PC401 NVMe SSD. One of the worst performing SSDs I've ever owned.

Then on my Alienware Area-51m R2, on my service tag it mentions that it has a Toshiba XG6 SSD for each of the 4x 1 TB NVMe SSDs but I actually received the laptop with a Western Digital SN730 SSD for all 4. This is in fact one of the best OEM SSDs out there and the performance is very fast.

With that said, from someone who has owned every single Samsung SSD. I will no longer buy any Samsung m.2 SSD as they all overheat and throttle even with a heatsink on. Sure, they look great in synthetic benchmarks but in actual real world usage, it doesn't give you the high and sustained performance that it claims due to the overheating and that is across all gens that I've owned.

A much better SSD and bang for the buck is the HP EX950 or even the slightly older HP EX920

 

Exactly Spartan. In real world usage you will not notice. I was looking at the benchmarks from my cheap kingston, it's not enough of a difference between it and the evo to even bother with spending 2 times as much. It's good enough for what I am doing.

 

I've purchased 2 XPS laptops in the last month (returned one), and they both came with Western Digital SN730 NVMe drives.

 

I just googled western digital sn730 on amazon and it seems to cost about 20 dollars less than the samsung evo. They are literally the same speed and everything but 20 dollars cheaper?
