I have just purchased a new XPS 16 and I wanted to know what if anything is upgradable on my system especially concerning the following components:
Core i7-720QM
1Gb ATI 4670
I headthat the processor can be upgraded to a newer one further down the line but I wanted to know if this was true? and secondly I know that graphics card a usually not upgradable on laptops but I have been out of the loop so long I didnt know if anything had changed.
Thanks, Josh

Yes you can upgrade the processor, no you cannot upgrade the graphics card as it is soldered to the board.
-
Thanks mate your the man ! How good is the 4670 ? do you know will it last for 1-2 years ?
-
why people buy laptops looking to upgrade video cards I'll never understand... 95% of the time you can't
-
Like I said I know you usually cant upgrade graphics I just didnt know I have been out of the loop. Its only a question.
-
Its a good mid-high range card, and will suit gaming at medium settings for the next couple of years although you may need to lower resolution on AAA titles such as Crysis to keep the performance up.
-
Thanks ill bear that in mind. Wont be gaming alot anyway. I stopped when i strated refering to my self as a noob.
-
The DELL XPS could have fallen into that 95% category I was just checking
-
Alienware laptop are usually upgradeable...right? I'm talking about the GPU.
-
Ye im pretty sure they are, obviously dont take my work for it but im pretty sure I read that some were.
P.S Nice laptop spec, wish I had the money to get the RGB screen ! and you also got the Blu Ray which they dont stock anym ore
-
Thanks I ordered mine in October the only good thing about that is I got all the parts I wanted, the bad thing is everything was newer ergo more expensive
I'm seeing the prices people are getting on similar specs now it almost makes me want to cry.
-
Ye bet it does however you have the satisfaction of getting yours first. How is the XPS for gaming ? You had any problems with it ?
-
Other than throttlegate? lol and that's a huge issue no. You pretty much can't game on it without throttlestop and 130W adapter...unfortunately. Supposedly a fix is coming soon.
-
I have no idea what that means, would you mind explaining the throttle stop and adapter thing ? to me
-
It's better explained here : Throttling Thread
-
Thanks will my new XPS have the same issues ?
-
While I shouldn't say yes with 100% certainty. I can say you should be prepared for it.
-
Thanks Ill check it out !

Guys, here's the solution to the RGBLED problem with the over-saturated colours (especially reds)...

CPU you can go up to an 820QM like me or a 920XM. The 920XM is not fully supported by Dell I think since its TDP is 55 W instead of 45 W, however it will fit.
-
Thanks! sounds good, how much did it costs you to upgrade to the i7 820QM and did you see much of a gain ?
-
Woops wrong thread...
-
Should of gotten a desktop.
-
Story of my life lol,
-
What will be the best power adapter upgrade to solve the throtteling issuse as good as possible, the 150W or 130W and will thisharm my system in any way ?
-
It's probably going to be around $300-$400 for you, I wouldn't know since I didn't pay. Dunno of any benefits either, because I had the 720QM for like 2 days before a tech installed the 820QM, so I never ran any benchmarks on the 720QM. However, from the specs sheet, the 820QM has 33% more L3 cache and is of course a bit faster (some say around 15% faster overall).
My 820QM gets a 13.38x on the Fritz Chess benchmark test with all 8 cores (you can run that too and see what you get). I'd say the only time I stress the CPU is when I convert videos for my iPhone or when I run benchmarks.
