Hi guys, new member here & great forum!
I have an XPS-15 (9550) which I really like apart from a few bugs like..
1. Sound (to my TV monitor) having intermittent stuttering issues - some days its fine and some days it stutters and skips - video plays fine but AUDIO skips / stutters.
2. Dell Premier Colour - Display Splitter, great program but seems buggy sometimes it splits fine - sometimes it doesn't detect the cursor in the "boxes" and I need to place the cursor "higher than usual" in the box to get it to resize in that window.
3. Battery is fully charged - yet ICON in task bar shows battery at 50%...this is just plain weird.
4. Cursor is really laggy - I have a Bluetooth mouse which might be the issue?
5. Overall just does not seem stable - great for doing work but feels glitchy.
Anyhow...I read the thread about performing a fresh install of windows and was tossing up the idea about doing this - just want to understand how this is better than just un-installing Dells bloat-ware and McAfee etc?
Thanks in advance
SS

clean install probably won't help on any of your issues.
all of them sound like buggy drivers. -
1). Agree with link626. Buggy driver. Nothing you can do.
2). Agree with link626. Buggy application. Nothing you can do.
3). Check battery charge settings in BIOS. There are some settings to stop battery charging at 40%-60% (as well as letting you set your own charge levels).
This is intended for people who primarily use the laptop plugged in to AC, since keeping a Li-Ion battery at ~40%-60% is better than a constant 100% for longevity of the battery. If you need to use the laptop on battery and want it charged to 100%, go I to BIOS and change charger behavior to Standard.
4). Probably your mouse, yes. If it's a Bluetooth mouse, it's probably a crappy imaging sensor in the mouse. Your poor mouse behavior will be either from the low-quality sensor, or Bluetooth itself.
If you want a decent wireless mouse, get a Logitech M705 Marathon Mouse. Decent sensor, uses tried-and-true Logitech 2.4Ghz wireless, affordable mouse, and battery lasts nearly forever.
Don't be fooled by the idea that Bluetooth must automatically be better, because it's newer. It's actually inferior to 2.4Ghz for mouse connectivity. That's why all high-end mice that prioritize performance use 2.4Ghz, and not Bluetooth.
As for fresh installs of Windows... it does three things. It's up to you whether you if it's worth it for your personal situation
1). Fresh installs get rid of bloatware. Even uninatalling Bloatware from Add / Remove Programs will leave you with a system that is slower than a true clean Windows install. But this isn't that big of a deal these days, with modern laptops having tons of CPU power, RAM, and fast SSD storage.
2). Fresh installs allow you to repartitioning your drive, and reclaim the space set aside for Dell Recovery partitions (about 30GB). Only do this if you are comfortable doing Windows re-install from scratch, since you will no longer be able to rely on Dell Recovery to restore your laptop to factory condition.
3). Clean installs let you play with your new toy. Windows installs are pretty good at running your laptop through its paces in multiple areas (CPU, RAM, storage system, network, USB flash drives). Some people like doing clean installs on new laptops, just to see how fast the new hardware is compared to their old hardware.

Thank you all for your comments..
Why is there no solution to buggy drivers?? Im not a tech person so sorry if that is a stupid question..? -
( I am a tech person and that is the same stupid answer any tech would give to that stupid question)
-
lol..tq.
I now know why my gf loves her mac. It just works. -
Lol. Believe me, Macs have their problems too. I just diagnosed and replaced a relative's faulty SATA cable. But the big difference with Apple is that a non-techie can just go to their local shopping mall, and walk into an Apple Store to get tech support (rather by than rely on phone support or trawling the internet for help).
Think about it. If Macs didn't have problems, then the Genius Bar wouldn't exist. And you wouldn't need to wait 1.5 days to find an open appointment slot to speak to someone there.

What exactly does a CLEAN WINDOWS INSTALL do for an xps15?
