Can anyone recommend which line is better? I plan on using it to haul my XPS 1645 and textbooks from home to school and around campus.
Thanks! -
I've bought -
a Zalman cooler, with the NC-2500 Plus on my wishlist.
a ShaggyMAC screen protector.
a Targus laptop bag from amazon
and a Zagg invisible shield... but let's not talk about that... -
Arctic Cooling MX-3
Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse
Cans of computer duster
Some isopropyl alcohol for the paste replacement
I think I'll need a laptop bag some time soon though, my rucksack (even though it already has a laptop sleve) isn't really big enough or padded enough. It's surprising really that I've had this computer for over a year and haven't bought one. -
For this:
I just bought today:
Mandarina Duck Top - Zip Slim Brief (Retail Price: $219.99 Sale Price: $59.99)
Dell Bluetooth Travel Mouse (Alpine White)(I wanted the Logitech M555B but I am a sucker for color/design schemes:
Logitech Comfort LapDesk:
ZM-NC2000 Notebook Cooler (Silver):
Now looking for a nice Sleeve. -
Logitech Notebook Riser (N110)
Logitech Notebook Cooling Pad (N100)
Logitech Portable Lapdesk (N315)
These are rather pricy but very useful and well-designed products. Simple yet sturdy. Basically, what I do is I stack the notebook cooler ON TOP of the laptop riser (yes, it works!), and then I simply flip my SXPS 1640 open to the fullest extent. Coincidentally, the maximum opening extent of the lid on the XPS 16 is actually enough so what when I set the XPS 16 on top of the cooler (which is on top of the riser), it sits perfectly without risk of slipping at all, and the screen faces nearly perpendicular to eye level (sometimes I bring the lid back down by like 2-3 degrees). It's such a great system. I use an external keyboard to type and an external mouse to navigate. The great thing about this next product, the Logitech Portable Lapdesk (N315), is that I can set my wireless keyboard on the larger surface, and my wireless mouse on the platform that extends out. I can sit comfortably a few feet away from my screen, just sit back and relax, and use the laptop. It's wonderful!
Finally, the Shaggymac screen/keyboard protector:
1 x17"-19" Custom Shop Laptop Screen Protector (SPCustom17)
Color Alloy
Width 15 1/8 in
Depth 9 in
Make & Model Dell Studio XPS 16
After 2 previous purchases testing out the size (yea...kind of an expensive 'test'), the above dimensions is what I've determined to be my optimal.
The dimensions I've purchased above is enough to cover the rubber pieces that usually touches the edge-to-edge screen when the lid is closed; this prevents the rubber from making imprints on the screen. The size 15 and 1/8 inches is exactly enough to span the ENTIRE width of the laptop, which means slightly past the rubber pieces. This makes it more convenient when laying it down before closing the lid, and I don't have to waste time aligning it with the rubber parts like I did with my 1/4 inch shorter one I ordered before.
The depth of 9 in is effectively enough to cover the entire depth of the keyboard up through the imaginary line where the 2 hinges meet. It's basically as deep as you can make it without causing it to fold on itself when you close the lid. It will cover the very top edge of the laptop screen (above the camera), down past the last row of pixels of the screen itself.
I actually type over this micofiber cloth because it keeps the sound softer and keeps my laptop keys fingerprintless.
And I guess if you want to count my mouse and keyboard as things I've bought "for" the XPS 16, haha......
Microsoft Explorer Mini Bluetrack Mouse. best wireless mouse I've ever used, hands down. ergonomically well-designed, very good reception. absolutely smooth scrolling. I rarely even have to move my wrist to go corner to corner, which has reduced the amount of friction I used to cause on my bottom wrist in the past with other mice. Never skips. Perfect mouse. I'm buying another one so I can carry it around w/ me w/o having to unplug the one at home all the time. Never had reception issues. Very soft clicks which is a plus. (Cons: 1-1.5 month battery life per AA battery; no off switch, the only way to turn it off is to use the usb dongle to plug it in which applies pressure on the 'off' switch below; also, the amount of pressure to click the middle scrolling wheel is a bit more than the other buttons, but not that bad.)
HP Elite Keyboard
Designed very similarly to the Dell XPS 16, except that it has a non-smooth surface (it has a grainy texture instead); regardless, best wireless keyboard I've used. Light tapping just like the XPS 16's, and highly responsive, never had reception problems. I got this a month ago, and it's still workin' as great as ever. Uses 2 AAA batteries. Supposely ~1 yr battery life. (Cons: no indicator for caps/num lock, but I really don't care for that...if I notice something is on caps, just hit the darn caps button! not that hard! lol; and some have cited the 'blue' LED light coming up on the USB dongle every time you type; may bother some people, but it doesn't bother me at all. It's good to know that my keyboard is getting proper reception at every keystroke =P ) -
I was waiting for the Samsung PX2370 monitor to come on sale when I saw Sam's Club was carrying this:
Samsung XL2370HD 23" widescreen LED LCD HDTV monitor
I picked one up last Thursday. Works as a perfect desktop monitor for the SXPS 16 and doubles as a HDTV as well. Not bad pricing either: $279.74 + tax.
I also got my Logitech Performance Mouse MX from Amazon yesterday. So my desktop setup is looking great. Now I'm just waiting for the Zalman ZM-NC2500 Plus Notebook Cooler to come on sale. -
Wow that's one nice LCD monitor! Is it 1080p or 1080i? I'd love one if it was 1080p... couldn't go to anything less after the RGB 1080p display on the notebook!
-
1080p LED-backlit. Should look as good or better than your current display (plus a whole lot bigger).
-
Best purchase I made for my SXPS was a sheet of 3M Carbon Fiber vinyl from eBay for $20 shipped. Did my palmrest and the back lid. REALLY helped with the fingerprint problem. Keyboard still attracts fingerprints but it's awesome to be able to use this laptop without worrying about getting the palmrest area dirty!

I'm surprised no one has listed a screen protector (non-cloth ones). I got one off ebay but I wouldn't recommend them as it came with little bends in the film which means bubbles. Although I think it's a necessity as my screen protector has marks where the keyboard has rubbed on it.
Anyway this is what I've bought:
- 16" laptop sleeve (when flat: 39cm x 29cm)
- 16" screen protector (it was actually labeled as a 16.4")
- Microfibre cloth (just a normal glass cleaning one from Bunnings)
- Different power cords for my travels
- USB Hubs
- Travel remote
- MSI Digital TV tuner (with full sized remote)
- HDMI cable
- VGA cable (to watch movies in hotels during my travels)
- Ikea Dave laptop table
-
-Razer Naga
-Oakley AP 3.0 backpack
-Wattage draw meter
-HDMI cable
