Called up Dell Technical Support, and they said the part number to the motherboard of the Studio 1640 is H114P.

But when I did my own research, I can purchase the Y503R

Dell Studio XPS 16 (1640) Motherboard System Board with ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB - Y503R

As seen in these options: Dell XPS Studio XPS 1640 motherboards » Dell XPS Studio XPS 1640 Laptop Repair Parts

Why the difference in part numbers, if I am looking to replace the entire motherboard of the computer, would purchasing the Y503R suffice or would I have to purchase the H114P? Thanks a ton!

There could be multiple part numbers for the same part. As long as you get a board with the same GPU configuration you should be fine. You can change to a different GPU, but you may need to replace the heatsink(s). You can also switch to a 1645 motherboard, but you'll need at least a new heatsink and CPU.

Didn't know you could swap in a 1645 mobo to a 1640... I'll have to keep that in mind for my own possible upgrade (4670 is apparently 2x faster than 3670).

Does it matter which motherboard I get for my Studio XPS since I will be buying the respective heatsink to match - I ask, because I have the fear that it might not fit in my case depending on the graphic card:

Dell XPS Studio XPS 1640 motherboards » Dell XPS Studio XPS 1640 Laptop Repair Parts

My motherboard no longer works, tried checking my Service Tag to see which ATI Radeon card I have to determine if it's the 512MB or the 1GB, would it matter if I purchased the 1GB?

It says on the ATI chip on the board:

    POP008.00
    216-0729051

Thank you, a speedy reply would be soo thoughtful, thank you!!

It's either 512MB or 1GB, since it's not the first motherboard since I never had a TV Tuner. Does it matter if I choose 512MB or 1GB if I buy the respective heatsink? Thank You :)!

I am soooo confused, which part should I get - they look identical except the part number code:

Dell Studio XPS 16 (1640) Motherboard System Board with ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3670 - 512MB - P743D (this is sold out but I can get it from another store)
Dell Studio XPS 16 (1640) Motherboard System Board with ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3670 - 512MB - U785D

It doesn't matter which one you choose if you are buying the proper heatsink as well. If you are choosing between two 3670 boards, it definitely doesn't matter.

So the 4670 board for the 1640 definitely fits except for the heatsink (no need for, say, a new laptop base)?

Yes, no need for a new base.

Then Dell was less than honest with me on that front...

They told me it wouldn't fit! Just new mobo + new heatsink, huh? Sounds like a decent upgrade (internet says 1.5-2.0x the performance) for a laptop from 2009.
