Hello all, I am a long time reader of these most informative forums, but I just registered and this is my first post.

I just finished purchasing a Dell XPS 16 two hours ago over the phone. Estimated arrival time is April 8th "because it is a high end system". It has an Core i5 520 M and an RGBLED display. Looks like I will have to eat dandelions for a while, while my bank account recovers.
So I was wondering if anyone knew what the OEM for my system was and if I wentwith the OEM route of my system, would I be able to save money compared to uying from Dell?
Thank you in advance for any reply.

I think it's Asus? You can Google it.

And I don't think so ... At least you won't get the design, components, and warranty provided by Dell. Unless you buy bulk (100000 laptops or so) you probably won't save on a per-unit basis.

AFAIK the laptop isn't merely a re-branded system. E.g. LG/Samsung manufacturers the LCD, Foxconn for the motherboard, etc. That ETA is pretty far off though; I'd expect you to receive it sooner than that unless there is a shortage in RGBLED monitors or Dell Canada supplies vary that much from U.S. counterparts. Could you save money by going through other brands? Possibly. Asus has some pretty competitive offerings out there but very few OEMs offer RGBLED monitors.

Right now the big delay is the 500gb 7200rpm drive. I think it's a delay of 16 days ATM.

He's referring to products Dell sells that weren't built/designed by them (which doesn't apply to any of their computers AFAIK). E.g. many "Dell" printers are rebranded Lexmark printers.

No he is not. And I quote what he said:

"So I was wondering if anyone knew what the OEM for my system was and if I wentwith the OEM route of my system, would I be able to save money compared to uying from Dell?"

As I stated before: Dell is the OEM of the system. Both design and build wise.

How would you know he wasn't? Your quote doesn't contradict anything I stated.

His quote contradicted everything you said. You said the poster was referring to random peripherals (printer, etc) when the poster was clearly referring to the laptop itself.

Re-read my post. Where did I say he was referring to random peripherals? I gave peripherals as an example of a product that Dell sells and "labels" but doesn't design/build (which he may have thought also applies to Dell's computers). I also mentioned that AFAIK, they do design/build all of their computers.

Going by an untrusted source, the ODM for the SXPS series is Quanta. AFAIK they don't release any bare bones models though.

Not quite true. It is quite normal for manufacturers (like Dell, HP etc...) to have another company build the product for them. I don't know the specifics for Dell's products in terms of all their manufacturing facilities and who owns what at various parts of the chain, and I agree you can't go and get the Dell XPS machine "further up the chain".

However, supporting the link provided by yejun, in terms of Dell, they have a factory in Poland to supply the EMEA area - they announced they are going to sell this to Foxconn. The Dell products will still be manufactured there, but, Dell won't own the factory or be building them themselves. Dell are now not only having the barebones manufactured and built by others, but, the final product as well.

    See:

Damn! Very informative! I had no idea they are doing this. I remember the gold o'le days when Gateway, Dell, and HP all build their own machines and had US Customer service and support. Now it's all down the toilet.

I agree with you Mr. Spock those were the good old days, but if they were still building and supporting their own PCs natively we’d be paying multiple hundreds of dollars more for computers from them. The U.S. has unfortunately priced themselves out of the manufacturing and support market. Who in the U.S. is going to work for a couple of dollars per hour? With that said I’d rather save the money and do my own support. Now if I could just get them to send me the PCs I order in parts I could save even more by building it myself!

LOL It's "good" not "gold". You are very confused in more ways than one.

AFAIK Dell never ever built their own laptops. Do you have a source for "your memories"?

Crap.. "Gold" ol'e days lol.... Yeah you can tell I'm nervous.. I am scheduled for surgery on Tuesday to have my pancreas removed due to tumors lol.

My old Dell tower and very old laptop I know were made in the US - or at least assembled in the US. And all the tech support I received on them were from US techs.

I still laugh when Dell actually says "you can pay more for US tech support" and actually have an option to order it with your new computer...
