Do we need extra software or drivers to use it? I'm thinking of buying a ir remote like this for it:
NEW DELL TRAVEL CARD IR REMOTE CONTROL MR425 FW331 - eBay (item 110588040726 end time Oct-18-10 18:39:07 PDT)

It's for the remote. No additional software required.

Only requirement for software is that you must install the Dell ITE/RF sensor driver to get the proper registry keys. It should come pre-installed on new systems, but on clean installs, some people make the mistake of using the newer driver from Windows Update but it doesn't support the MCE/Travel Remotes properly until after the Dell driver has been installed. You can also manually find the file InstallRegistry.reg in the Dell ITE driver package and install that over-top the WU driver if you run into problems with the remote commands not being recognized.
noticed you were shopping eBay, for reference the remote can be bought brand-new from Dell for $25.99: DELL Travel Remote Control for Dell Studio XPS 13 Laptop : Software | Dell
It's incorrectly attributed to the XPS 13, it's actually the same one they send out and sometimes include with other systems, and works fine with the XPS 16. -
New on Ebay for $6 is a good deal. You could also program a harmony remote (I love my harmony remote, though it doesn't fit into the expresscard slot, lol) to work with the laptop, it's just a standard media center remote.

I use my spare M1530 media remote

I didn't need to install any drivers to get mine to work... just the IR one... I think I found it in the 1645 driver thread.
What is the function of the Infra-Red Port on SXPS 16?
